Character Interview + Giveaway: Macy from The Bloodstone Saga

Today I'm joined on the blog by Macy (aka Harmonia), the protagonist in Courtney Cole's fabulous young adult Bloodstone Saga series. Macy was nice enough to take some time out of her extraordinarily busy and complicated life of love, loss, and reincarnation to answer a few questions for me! I read the first book in this series, Every Last Kiss, and thoroughly enjoyed it, you can read my mini review here. Thanks for being here Macy!

Your memories are normally wiped clean after each life and you are born again having to relearn your purpose in your current incarnation. Do you ever wonder how your current life compares to the ones before? Things like whether or not this life is easier or harder than the last, or whether you’ve learned anything from those past experiences even though you don’t remember them?

Hi Jenny. Thanks for having me here today. Ah, my memories. I have so many now. If I remember correctly, you’re caught up through the first book of my adventures, yes? Much has happened since then- so much has changed. I don’t wish to spoil it for your readers because I will just admit it, my life has taken many twists and turns and I suppose, from a reader’s vantage point, those twists are interesting. So I won’t spoil it for them.

To answer your question, though...yes, there were times when, as a Keeper, I did wonder how my current life compared to previous ones. My lives were always difficult- so it would have been impossible not to wonder.

If you were given the opportunity to stay in a single life and not return again once you lived that life in its entirety, do you think you would grab on to that chance?

My current life is the one that I will hold on to forever. It’s my true purpose and I have fought very hard to be here. My previous lives? No. I wouldn’t wish to stay in any of them. They each taught me something valuable, but they were rough, usually heart-wrenching. I wouldn’t want to re-live them or linger.

Let’s say you were granted an audience with the Fates themselves and could ask one question that they would answer truthfully and without any riddles. What would you ask?

Jenny, there are times in life when someone disappoints you so greatly that you really don’t want to hear their explanations. This is one of those times.

Now that your memories of ancient Egypt and Cleopatra have been unlocked and you remember your life as Charmian, do you have any desire to return to present day Egypt and see how things have changed?

Egypt… I have to say that Egypt is a place that will always hold a special place in my heart. The beautiful sea in Alexandria that sparkles just so in the sunlight, the smell of the jasmine in Cleopatra’s garden… but part of the reason that I love Egypt so much is because of my memories from that life- the people there. Marc Antony, Cleopatra, Iras… they are gone. Cleopatra’s palace is at the bottom of the Alexandrian bay. I think that revisiting that area would only serve to make me sad. I think I’ll just preserve my memories the way that they are.

Name one event in the world’s history that you would love the opportunity to go back in time and change if you didn’t need to worry about the repercussions.

Ah, Jenny. If there is one thing that I have learned through all of my troubles, it is that there are always repercussions to any action. Because of that, no matter how much I would like to change some things (world wars, the Titanic’s sinking, the Holocaust)… I wouldn’t.

Can you tell us one thing about Cleopatra (the woman, the mother, or the ruler) that the history books have left out or haven’t captured accurately?

I know many things about Cleopatra and she would kill me (maybe literally) if I shared them. But here is something: She believed that she was the daughter of the Egyptian goddess Isis and that the bite of an asp would take her to the gods. She was wrong about that… and when you read further into my adventures, you will see why.

What one memory of your time as Charmian do you treasure most?

The relationships that I cultivated. That time period was so passionate and moving because of the events surrounding us… which made our relationships all the more crucial and important. But that is true in any life, I think. The relationships that you create and maintain are always the most important thing.

Thank you so much for hosting me today, Jenny. It has been a pleasure!

Happy to have you on any time Macy! You can find more information on Macy, Courtney, and the Bloodstone Saga here:

MY TATTERED BONDS

It is always darkest before the dawn. Harmonia has certainly found this to be true. She has faced more than any one person, goddess or mortal, should ever have to.

She has lost her soul mate time after time, lies and deceit have surrounded her and in fact, she has even been misled about her very identity. Yet she has always emerged with strength and grace. But now she will face the unthinkable. Her daughter has been taken and Harmonia will risk everything to get her back.

In this epic series finale, all will be revealed. The only question remaining is…Who will be left standing?

I think I screwed up with the rafflecoptor entry when I tried to leave me email though :(

  9. Can I say first that I love that cover and the idea of reincarnation in a YA book really sounds intriguing! I've seen this around and I think that this interview really amped up my want for it. Gotta know about Cleo!

  10. I think it's very wise that if given the chance to change history, Macy wouldn't want to. I'm a firm believer that if you go back in the past, the present will be altered (as opposed to the belief that what has happened has already happened so going back to the past changes nothing).

  11. Wow, what a concept. It would be pretty neat to have lived all those lives, met all those famous people, and had all those experiences. Though most definitely lonely.

  20. If it were me, I'd want to go to the places I remembered to see the changes which may or may not be sad, bit I think it would reinforce the fact that my memories were real.
