Guest Post + Giveaway: Tracy Deebs and Tempest Rising
Today I'd like to extend a warm Supernatural Snark welcome to Tracy Deebs, author of the upcoming young adult novel Tempest Rising (releases May 10th). She was nice enough to take a little time to give us a few fun facts about herself so we can get to know her better, and be sure to follow her book tour through Teen Book Scene to read all the author interviews, character interviews and reviews!
Hi, everyone. First off, I want to thank Jenny for having me here today—I really appreciate it, and the chance to talk a little bit about Tempest Rising, my debut YA novel. Now, to be completely honest, I get a little antsy when someone asks me to write a bio of myself, because I never have a clue what to include (and what to leave out). But I’ll give it my best shot.
I love lipstick, books and fancy earrings (though not necessarily in that order).
I love to travel, but absolutely refuse to set foot in a tent.
I love dancing, reading poetry (the Beats are my favorite), swimming and trying new recipes.
I’m addicted to chocolate, pickles and strawberry-banana smoothies (though not at the same time).
I love thunderstorms, unexpected downpours, and walking in the rain, but hate the feel of wet clothes against my skin when the storm is over.
When I was young, I watched the Hans Christian Anderson version of The Little Mermaid at least once a day for three years. And though my mermaid obsession eventually gave way to a love of all things Wonder Woman, my interest in mermaids never went completely away (obviously).
My favorite book of all time is Ayn Rand’s Anthem, while my least favorite book of all time is John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath.
My favorite book that I’ve read in the last year is Cory Doctorow’s Little Brother.
One summer, I went to every major amusement park in America. Another summer, I ran away with band.
Two of my closest friends and I wrote a book called The International Kissing Club, about four girls who travel internationally and start a Facebook page to keep track of the points they get from kissing boys. It comes out in January 2012.
I’ve climbed the Pyramids in Egypt, walked on the banks of the Red Sea, kissed a boy in front of the Eiffel Tower, gotten soaked at Cleopatra’s favorite bathing spot and surfed Diamondhead Bay in Hawaii. I’ve also skydived over New Mexico and stood at the Cave of the Winds in Niagara Falls.
Despite my love of the water, I have a deep-seated fear of sharks. A serious, awful, unbelievable terror of sharks.
I came up with the idea for Tempest Rising when my agent asked me “So, how do you feel about mermaids …”
I set Tempest Rising on the beaches I used to hang out at, swim in and surf when I was her age.
At seventeen, there was nothing quite like a midnight ride out to La Jolla and a long walk on the beach.
To this day, my favorite thing to do is to curl up with a cup of tea and a book as I listen to the rain hit against the window.
And last but not least, I’m part of the Chills and Thrills Teen Book Tour, which will be visiting all the major cities in Texas in the next month. Check out our website to see the other authors on the tour: http://chillsandthrillsteenbooktour.wordpress.com/whos-who/
So, tell me one cool thing about you and be entered to win a copy of Tempest Rising.
Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing all those fun tidbits Tracy! I have to say I too am addicted to chocolate, refuse to set foot in a tent, and harbor a spectacular fear of sharks. Clearly, we both rock ;-) To be entered in the giveaway please just leave a comment answering Tracy's prompt and include an email address so I can contact you if you win. This contest is open to US residents only and will run through midnight EST on May 8th. Good luck everyone!
TEMPEST RISING (from Goodreads):
Tempest Maguire wants nothing more than to surf the killer waves near her California home; continue her steady relationship with her boyfriend, Mark; and take care of her brothers and surfer dad. But Tempest is half mermaid, and as her seventeenth birthday approaches, she will have to decide whether to remain on land or give herself to the ocean like her mother. The pull of the water becomes as insistent as her attraction to Kai, a gorgeous surfer whose uncanny abilities hint at an otherworldly identity as well. And when Tempest does finally give in to the water's temptation and enters a fantastical underwater world, she finds that a larger destiny awaits her—and that the entire ocean's future hangs in the balance.

I enjoyed the interview. One cool thing about me, I can sew something anything just by looking at it. I can make my own patterns and it usually comes out good.

This sounds like a fun book. Great cover too. I also love to travel. And my idea of roughing it is staying in a motel instead of a hotel :-)
ReplyDeleteGreat guest post! :) I used to love The Little Mermaid too. Though The Grapes of Wrath is not my least favorite, I did not like it as much as so many people seem to.
ReplyDeleteTempest Rising seems to be an interesting read!

1 thing??? How about 25???
ReplyDelete1... There is one thing in the world that could change my mood in the matter of seconds. That is music!
2... With that said, I can say that I saw all my favorite bands in concert at least four times each.
3... At the time being I have six or seven tattoos, depends on how you look at it. But when I am done I want two full sleeves and a back piece. Plus one on my calf.
4... I like to dye my hair many unnatural colors, it shows my individuality as a person. Red and Orange looks the best mixed with my black hair.
5... By the time I am 45, I want to own my own restaurant. Probably start off with a franchise and build up to my own.
6... Since I was seven years old I have had a nickname. My very close friends still call me that name, and they are the only ones I will let me call me it.
7... I still play video games, and love it. I own every system ever made except for the Wii, which will be soon.
8... With that said, I used to be a die hard Sony fan, but with this generation consoles I made the transition to the Xbox 360. Better games and a better online experience.
9... Also my favorite genre of game is RPGs and 1st person Shooters.
10... Lately the only thing that can make me happy is music... not that I am a very depressed person, but when a person that you love so much, leaves your life... it puts a hole into you.
11... Was called a manwhore by many people. That might be true when I am single, but when I am taken I am very much committed to that person.
12... My New Years Resolution is to get back to my roots and expand my horizons.
13... There is nothing better than being in a mosh pit... The Adrenaline pumping while listening to some good music.
14... There is nothing better than seeing a cute girl in a school girl outfit.
15... I wish that my friends and I could spend more time together.
16... When life finally seems to be going my way. I think I do something to make it all crash down on me again.
17.... I have mellowed out so much since high school, it seems like I am totally shy. That is till you get to know me. But no more streaking, no more obnoxious me.
18... I am perhaps one of the biggest fans of the paranormal shoes, that you will ever meet. Love my Buffy/Angel, True Blood, Supernatural, Heroes, Fringe
19... I have met and hung out with all the cast of Buffy and Angel numerous times. As well as at least a dozen bands.
20... I can say that I was in love three in my life, and it was because of me that they didn't last. But that all lead me to my wife.
21... I wonder if it is possible to be just friends with some people.
22... I am very proud to be a part of my family. I couldn't say that while I was younger, but they have grown very near and dear to me. My sister might have done many things wrong in her life, but seeing her grow up and become the mother to my nephew is a great experience to behold.
23... I am slowly picking up all the mess I have created over the last few months and trying to get my life back together.
24... I wish that money didn't matter anymore. And I am sick of people judging others by how much they make.
25... My ultimate goal in life is to see my first born grandchild walk down and get their diploma.
oops

Wonderful Post!! Jenny you always have great content! BTW I love the new look!
ReplyDeleteHmm let's see, one cool thing about me...
I have a hidden talent for drawing. The thing is, I can only draw things that are in front of me---portraits mostly. I cannot pull images from my imagination and render them on paper well. It just doesn't work for me for some reason. Weird, right?
preternaturalprimer (at) hotmail (dot) com
I've ridden an elephant in Thailand. It was the only one with tusks for us tourists to enjoy and we fed a baby elephant bananas, it had these baby hairs on it's head that were about 5 inches long lol baby fuzz.
ReplyDeletefrellathon(at)gmail(dot)com
One cool thing about me is I love to read and I am always looking for good books to read. Please enter me in contest. I would love to read this book. Tore923@aol.com
ReplyDeleteLet's see...I come from a family of eleven, six girls, five brother, all from the same parents (I'm number 7). I love, LOVE the lake, but not really the ocean as I'm afraid of MOST marine life. Not just sharks, also whales, dolphins, etc... I think the only thing I like is sea turtles, LOL! I do love the beach however, so I frequent San Diego/Carlsbad/La Jolla often.
ReplyDelete(ps - I don't mind a tent, especially one on the beach of a lake. Love early morning wake boarding!)

Not entering as I'm international, but I so enjoyed reading this guest post and felt just the tiniest bit of jealousy when I read that Tracy's been to Egypt, kissed a boy in front of the Eiffel Tower and walked on the banks of the Red Sea. I so want to do that and more. :)
ReplyDeleteOh and just for the fun of it... One cool thing about me?
I have 8 penpals who I regularly write long, colourful, handwritten letters to and collect and send out post cards and trinkets from my country to my friends. :)

I really enjoyed reading this interview. Tracy has obviously lived a really rounded life... I enjoyed reading about going to Egypt and the Eiffel Tower to just name a few! And I also have a serious fear of Sharks (also Gators) I know that sounds crazy but when I was little and lived in Florida my dad used to tell me not to go in the water because the sharks and gators would get me, as I became an adult and told him I had a FEAR of that water, even if it was A POOL he would laugh and say it was the only way he could get me to stay away from the water. So now at 28 years old I wont swim in any lake/ocean/pool where I can't SEE whats below me... Also if its nighttime and I can't see I might last like 5 minutes in the water and then I scramble out really quickly lol ;)

I am the most untalented person in the world!!! The only thing I am good at is my job and it is pretty boring to most people. I am a Property Manager of a class AA highrise commercial building in north dallas. So basically I make sure it looks good and keep the tenants happy as well as all the behind the scenes paperwork!
ReplyDeleteOther than that I love to read and watch football! I can't do anything to save my life!
