Introducing Miss Holly + Winners

A couple of you may have seen my Tweets last week regarding a new addition to the family, and I thought I would share some pictures with you because, well, she's kind of cute ;-) My husband and I rescued her last Friday from a local shelter where she was on the kill list. The rescue organization we found her through just happened to be at the shelter to rescue another dog when they walked into euthanasia room and saw that she was next up on the list for the evening. Apparently, whoever dropped her off at the shelter said she was a pit bull and, unfortunately, that guaranteed her automatic placement on the kill list. Luckily though, the rescue organization was able to grab her and my husband and I agreed to foster her until we could find her a permanent home.

So, here she is, 11-week old Holly! She may have some pit bull in her, but I also think she has some boxer and maybe some mastiff too based on her coloring. We've received a bunch of adoption applications for her, so we should have a permanent home for her soon which makes me both very happy and very, very sad as I'm kind of attached to her. After this experience though, my husband and I are both hoping to foster again in the future to help save more pit bulls and other "bully breeds" who find themselves with a very short amount of time to find new homes before getting put down.

(Holly with big brothers Gatsby and Griffin)

To be completely random, I also thought I would announce the winners of my Love Potions e-book giveaway! Thank you so much to all those who entered, and to Michelle for so generously offering up three copies. All the winners have been emailed!

  2. Oh my gosh, she is so completely gorgeous! I'm so glad she's getting the chance to be with a loving family. You gave her another chance at life, which is priceless. This story just makes me smile! It also makes me sad, though, for the other dogs that aren't as fortunate.

  3. She has such sad eyes, maybe she doesn't want to leave your loving home. The world would be a better place if there are more compassionate people like you and your family.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A BLESSED NEW YEAR FROM OUR HOME TO YOURS!

  4. So cute!! Actually, she looks just like my friend's dog that's a beagle/pit mix. Except she's solid with black tail and paws. I'm so glad you rescued her though.

  5. Michelle - Isn't she? I couldn't get over her little face:)

Jamie - Thank you! We thought so:) It makes me really sad knowing there were a number of dogs there that same night that didn't get rescued, but I just try to hope moving forward more people will want to adopt or foster:)

JC - I'd love to keep her, but with two very high energy dogs already in the house, she's a little too much for us at the moment. All the applications we have for her though are from people who live nearby us, so we'll be able to check in on her:)

Christy - I'd be interested to have her tested and see what breed mix she is:) We're really glad we rescued her too!

  6. Oh my God, she looks so sad! But I know she must feel like the luckiest girl in the world to be in your home!! And to have two big brothers to protect her until she finds a forever family! You have a big heart Jenny (and your husband)! Thanks for saving such a sweet little girl! You know how I feel about animals, especially dogs.

    And congrats to the winners!

  7. Oh my gosh, Jenny, she's adorable! I love the little white bit on her snout. So cute! (How could someone bear to euthanize something so sweet!?) You and your husband are so great for taking her on. :)

  9. Holly is absolutely adorable! Bless you for fostering her. I don't understand the automatic assumption that a "breed" is bad. Wishing all the best that she finds a loving home.

  12. Aw, Jenny, she's so cute and looks so tiny compared to Gatsby and Griffin!

  13. Holly is adorable!!!!!!!!!!! Honestly, God Bless you a million times over for your love & kindness!!

My bf and his daughter belong to the Illinois English Bulldog Rescue, and they help foster, too! Sometimes the *puppy mills* surrender their stable and it's hard to find immediate placement for all the furbabies, but everybody manages to pitch in/donate/foster/etc.

How ignorant/revolting to place such beautiful creatures on *kill* lists simply due to being a specific breed!! Ugh :P

Thank goodness there are sweeties like you and the IEBR out there to help :D

  14. Aww! She is so cute. I am glad you were able to rescue her. We rescued my dog from an Amish puppy mill and I wouldn't do it any other way. There are so many dogs out there that need good homes. Enjoy her!

  15. So, I wrote you all responses to your amazingly sweet and supportive comments, and when I was on Christina's, the very last comment, Holly came over and decided to see what all the fuss was about. She stepped on the keyboard and effectively erased all my responses. Win. Thank you all though, your comments mean so much to me!

  16. HOly shite, how could you kill that face? UGH. Irresponsible owners and not getting dogs fixed and blah blah. Makes me so angry. So happy you and hubs are doing this now. It must be SO rewarding. I hope to do this for cats one day, and maybe human chitlins. :)

    Happy Holidays, Jenny!

  17. Ash - I have no idea! I just don't understand, she would have been easy to adopt out as cute as she is, I just can't fathom the automatic death sentence. Makes me sad:(

  18. Holly is SO cute! To think she was on a kill list is horrifying. Thanks for saving her, and it looks like her big bros like having her around for a bit.

  19. oh thats a reason to get pet and such a cutie. I always have told my kids we would get a pet when youngest daughter was 5. Well she is 5 but not enough room :)LOL

  20. OMG too freakin cute! So glad you could take her in. How could anyone look at her and not want to adopt her???

    ReplyDelete
  21. OH MY GOSH, JENNY!!! I am officially in love with you, your husband, and that dog (in the most non-creepy way possible)!! That's just SO AMAZING of you to take her in until you can find a home for her! <3 :) Holly looks like such a sweetheart and I can't believe they were going to put her down! You are my hero, Jenny!

    I want a dog! x)

  22. Aww Holly is adorable! She looks so calm and sad. And nope, can't see the pitbull in her, but rather the boxer. Glad you could save her :-)

  23. Oh, she's too cute. How can you stand to give her up? I'm banning myself already from ever doing the foster thing. I have a heart that would swallow up every dog/cat I took in, and then I'd be that crazy dog/cat lady with a zillion pets! Still, I admire your will-power and your compassion :)

    Congrats winners!

  24. Jen - Thank you! And I agree, I can't imagine anyone putting her down:(

Julie - I would love to keep Holly, but we just don't have the room either. Two big dogs plus the husband and I is a snug enough fit:)

Paranormal - That's what we're hoping, that no one will be able to resist that face:)

Mimi - You are the sweetest! Your comment almost made me cry:) She's such a good girl, I'm hoping we get her in a home in the next couple weeks!

Stella - Don't let that face fool you, she is definitely a feisty, mischievous girl:) Such a sweetie though!

Asher - It's going to be hard. We swore we wouldn't be foster parents either just because we'd want to keep the dog, but I figured her life was worth more than my pain over letting her go:) And this way we can hopefully save more dogs in the future, but it's going to take all my willpower to hand her over when the time comes.

  25. Oh. my. goodness!!!! Just look at that precious faaaaaaaaaaaaace!!!! My friend has a pitty/boxer mix, and he's a bit hyper but he's the sweetest! Miss Holly looks lovely, and what an 'old soul' look she has on her face! I hope you continue to enjoy her until she finds her forever home - good thing you and the rescue league found her in time!

  26. Oooooh so cuuute! (the puppy I mean) I want a puppy!!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. What a cutie! I just love her nose, it's so unique!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Linds - I know, I'm kind of in love with that little face:) She's definitely got some energy, but we're used to that with the boys so it all works out. They play with her and wear her out pretty well:)

Kris - They're a lot of work (I'd forgotten), but so worth it:)

    Mandy - Isn't it adorable?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh my gosh, what a cutie!!!! That stripe of white on her nose makes her look like she got into a bag of powdered sugar or something!

And I totally agree that more love needs to be given to "bully breeds"--I'm cuddled some amazingly loving bulldogs and rottweilers. It's all how the animal is raised--show them love and caring, and they'll show it right back.

Conversely, when I was very little, I got attacked by my neighbor's pit bulls when they jumped the fence one day when I was outside on my swingset. Turns out, he was raising them for underground dog fighting rings, so of course those dogs were mean because he was probably provoking them and starving them to make them vicious.

My opinion of that: do unto others. I would have no problem if someone starved HIM and poked him with sticks and yelled at him all the time. See how he likes it. Ditto for anyone who abuses an animal.

...and rant off. Sorry, I just get really mad anytime someone hurts an animal. They ask for so little, and it breaks my heart when anyone takes advantage of that.

    Smiles!
    Lori

  31. She's BEAUTIFUL, Jenny!! Your pics are also gorgeous. Congrats!

  32. How can anyone even attempt to put such a sweet looking pup like that on the kill list? So sad. At least Holly's got a wonderful temporary home with you! That's so great of you and your husband to do that,

And congrats to the winners! :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh, sooooo cute! Both of mine are rescues so I adore anyone who feels the same way about animals. And I'd say she's got a ton more Boxer in her than anything else--she looks a lot like my brother's dog, who's half pure Boxer.

You're a brave woman, being a foster mom for that cutie pie. I don't know if I'd be able to give her to someone else! Good on you for helping out a dog who clearly needed you. :)

Oh, and gratz to your winner!

  37. OMG I'm so happy you were able to rescue her! How sad that she's automatically put on the kill list because of her supposed breed... how can you do that to that face?!?!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oh my goodness! SO FREAKING CUTE! We had a pit pull (100% though) and she was one of the sweetest dogs we ever had! It's all about how they are raised!

  39. Dooood! If Ozzie wasn't such a territorial brat, I'd bring Holly home as his sister. She is precious!!! That face!

You are the hubs are pretty AWESOME, Jenny.

  40. Congrats to the winner! And love the new addition! Your so kind to rescue Holly.

  41. Oh man she is the CUTEST EVER. I love the one of her sleeping on the fleece Nobbly Wobbly. We have one for our dog too and she loves it!

Good on you for saving this cutie's life. She looks like a sweetheart.

  42. Consider this my adoption application if you would :) I'm almost more in love with her than I am with her big brothers! I had a boxer growing up, Brody, and now my dad/fam has a mixed breed Macy who looks almost exactly like Holly. She's part boxer and part pit and she is the most loyal dog with the sweetest disposition you will ever find. I know you'll find Holly a great home, wish I could steal her perfect little face

  43. Ok he is just stinking adorable! I mean like just snuggle up too and hold forever adorable. Look at how small he is next to his new family :)
