Giveaway: Black Widow: Red Vengeance

Happy Friday Everyone!

As a little celebration for another week being over (who's ready for a vacation?), I have a fun giveaway to share with you all! Last year Margaret Stohl dipped into the Marvel Universe with Black Widow: Forever Red and has recently released the second book in this series, Black Widow: Red Vengeance. I happen to be a huge fan of all things Marvel, so while I haven't had the chance to read these yet, I'm thoroughly looking forward diving in to both of them!

Before we get to the giveaway, here's a little bit about book two:
Emotions are dangerous, which is why the graduates of Moscow’s famed spy school the Red Room are taught to keep their enemies close and their loved ones at a distance. Black Widow and Red Widow, also known as Natasha Romanoff and Ava Orlova, forgot that lesson once, and they won’t forget it again.

But the Widows have inherited something else from their shared Moscow past: a relentless need for vengeance—Ivan Somodorov is dead, but his network of terror remains.

While the Widows search South America in order to extinguish a smuggling operation with ties to their old nemesis, their own Red Room not only attempts to assassinate them both but also hacks their secure S.H.I.E.L.D. network. As a result, Ava and Natasha find themselves thrust into a trying mission of international intrigue that takes them throughout the world and back to New York City, where their friends Dante and Sana become unlikely targets as well.

Once again, nothing is as it seems, no one can be trusted, and no one is safe—not unless the Widows can stop a conspiracy involving stolen nuclear warheads, mind-altering chemical weapons, and ultimately, betrayal by old friends and enemies alike.

Giveaway: Sea Spell Prize Pack!

Happy Friday Everyone!

I've been absent this week (obviously) which made me sad because I adore all of you and feel very out of the loop at the moment, but the good news is I got a lot of work done! I'm still swamped, but it's hard to be too upset about that because building my business makes me all warm and fuzzy inside:)

As promised, I'm popping in today to partner with Disney-Hyperion and bring you a very special giveaway for Sea Spell, the fourth and final book in Jennifer Donnelly's Waterfire Saga! Before we get to the giveaway though, below is a bit about the book so you know what you're getting yourself into:

Sea Spell releases June 14th from Disney-Hyperion
At the end of Dark Tide, Book 3 in the Waterfire Saga, Astrid leaves her mermaid friends to confront her ancestor, Orfeo, the evil force behind the rise of the monster Abbadon. Orfeo possesses one of the six talismans that the merls need in order to keep the monster locked up forever. But without the ability to songcast, how will Astrid be able to defeat the most powerful mage in history?
Meanwhile, Serafina and her Black Fins train goblin troops for battle against her uncle Vallerio’s death riders. Will Sera ever see her beloved home—and her beloved Mahdi—again, or will the Volneros take over the mer realms while Orfeo takes on the gods themselves? Nothing less than the fate of the underwater world is at stake in this breathtaking finale.

Giveaway: Passenger by Alexandra Bracken

I'm super excited today to be able to host a giveaway for one of my most anticipated reads of the year (well, technically of next year since it comes out January 5th, but I feel like I've been waiting forever for this one!), Passenger. LOOK AT THAT COVER! This went on my must-have list solely for the cover at first, but then I actually tore my eyes away long enough to read the synopsis and a full-scale epic obsession began. What's it about you ask? It's about all things AWESOME:

In one devastating night, violin prodigy Etta Spencer loses everything she knows and loves. Thrust into an unfamiliar world by a stranger with a dangerous agenda, Etta is certain of only one thing: she has traveled not just miles, but years from home. And she's inherited a legacy she knows nothing about from a family whose existence she's never heard of. Until now.

Nicholas Carter is content with his life at sea, free from the Ironwoods–a powerful family in the Colonies–and the servitude he's known at their hands. But with the arrival of an unusual passenger on his ship comes the insistent pull of the past that he can't escape and the family that won't let him go so easily. Now the Ironwoods are searching for a stolen object of untold value, one they believe only Etta, his passenger, can find. In order to protect her, Nick must ensure she brings it back to them–whether she wants to or not.

Together, Etta and Nicholas embark on a perilous journey across centuries and continents, piecing together clues left behind by the traveler who will do anything to keep the object out of the Ironwoods' grasp. But as they get closer to the truth of their search, and the deadly game the Ironwoods are playing, treacherous forces threaten to separate Etta not only from Nicholas but from her path home... forever.

Giveaway: Black Widow Prize Pack!

Mondays are always the worst, so in an effort to make this particular Monday a little more bearable, I'm bringing you a very special giveaway. Yay! I'm an ENORMOUS fan of all things Avengers-related (okay, it's possible I'm a fan of all things Chris Hemsworth-related, but that's neither here nor there), so I can't wait to dive into Margaret Stohl's exploration of infamous spy, Natasha Romanov. If you're not familiar with this part of the Marvel Universe, here's a little bit about the book:

Enter the world of the Avengers’ iconic master spy… Natasha Romanoff is one of the world’s most lethal assassins. Trained from a young age in the arts of death and deception, Natasha was given the title of Black Widow by Ivan Somodorov, her brutal teacher at the Red Room, Moscow’s infamous academy for operatives.

Ava Orlova is just trying to fit in as an average Brooklyn teenager, but her life has been anything but average. The daughter of a missing Russian quantum physicist, Ava was once subjected to a series of ruthless military experiments—until she was rescued by Black Widow and placed under S.H.I.E.L.D. protection. Ava has always longed to reconnect with her mysterious savior, but Black Widow isn’t really the big sister type. Until now.

When children all over Eastern Europe begin to go missing, and rumors of smuggled Red Room tech light up the dark net, Natasha suspects her old teacher has returned—and that Ava Orlova might be the only one who can stop him. To defeat the madman who threatens their future, Natasha and Ava must unravel their pasts. Only then will they discover the truth about the dark-eyed boy with an hourglass tattoo who haunts Ava’s dreams. . . .

Black Widow: Forever Red features all the heart-pounding adventure readers expect from Marvel, written by #1 New York Times best-selling author Margaret Stohl. Uncover a new side of the Marvel Universe that will thrill loyal fans and newcomers alike, as Stohl reveals the untold story of Black Widow for the very first time.

Spinning Starlight Blog Tour: Guest Post + Giveaway

http://www.rockstarbooktours.com/2015/09/tour-schedule-spinning-starlight-by-rc.html

Today I'm super excited to welcome author R.C. Lewis to the blog as part of the promotional tour for Spinning Starlight, a retelling of The Wild Swans by Hans Christian Andersen. There's little I love more than a fairytale retelling, so this book was destined for my must-have list before I even knew of its existence. Since my adoration of fairytales borders on excessive, I thought I'd ask R.C. what fairytales would most appeal to protagonist Liddi if she had nothing but time to read!

Liddi Jantzen’s Top Three Reading-Time Favorites

(First off, Liddi would be all about the audiobook, since her world went full-speed ahead on audio/video interface being the way to go ages back. But without further ado...)

#1 The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen

Obviously. Liddi would have oodles of sympathy for this character’s can’t-talk quandary. From firsthand experience, no less. She knows the frustration and fear that can come from not being able to communicate comfortably with those around her, especially total strangers in a strange land that defies all her prior experiences.

She would not be a fan of the ending.

#2 The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Andersen

(Liddi doesn’t know about her own roots in Andersen’s work, so it’s amusing that she’s so partial to his work.)

Again, Liddi would very much identify with the main character in this story. She’s long felt like the odd-one-out among her brothers, and it has nothing to do with being the only girl. Everyone in her family has a spark of genius when it comes to improving old technologies or inventing new ones. Liddi’s competent enough skillwise, but the ideas just won’t come. She wonders if she’s somehow from the wrong “batch.”

#3 Constellation Myths—any and all

(This will keep her busy since the first two are relatively short.)

Liddi grows up with a low opinion of any kind of superstition, yet she can’t help being a stargazer like her late mother. Despite the interstellar distance they represent, looking at the stars makes her feel closer to something. Later, a new friend tells her stories of the constellations on another world, so after the events of Spinning Starlight, I think Liddi would be very interested in hearing such stories from other places and cultures.

Thanks so much for stopping by R.C.!

SPINNING STARLIGHT

Sixteen-year-old heiress and paparazzi darling Liddi Jantzen hates the spotlight. But as the only daughter in the most powerful tech family in the galaxy, it's hard to escape it. So when a group of men show up at her house uninvited, she assumes it's just the usual media-grubs. That is, until shots are fired.

Liddi escapes, only to be pulled into an interplanetary conspiracy more complex than she ever could have imagined. Her older brothers have been caught as well, trapped in the conduits between the planets. And when their captor implants a device in Liddi's vocal cords to monitor her speech, their lives are in her hands: One word and her brothers are dead.

Desperate to save her family from a desolate future, Liddi travels to another world, where she meets the one person who might have the skills to help her bring her eight brothers home-a handsome dignitary named Tiav. But without her voice, Liddi must use every bit of her strength and wit to convince Tiav that her mission is true. With the tenuous balance of the planets deeply intertwined with her brothers' survival, just how much is Liddi willing to sacrifice to bring them back?

Haunting and mesmerizing, this retelling of Hans Christian Andersen'sThe Wild Swans strings the heart of the classic with a stunning, imaginative world as a star-crossed family fights for survival in this companion to Stitching Snow.

R.C. LEWIS

R.C. Lewis teaches math to teenagers—sometimes in sign language, sometimes not—so whether she’s a science geek or a bookworm depends on when you look. That may explain why her characters don’t like to be pigeonholed. Coincidentally, R.C. enjoys reading about quantum physics and the identity issues of photons.

The Big Love Letter Event: Melissa Landers

Welcome to week four of The Big Love Letter Event! For those of you who missed the introductory post several weeks ago, this event will run every Friday through March 13th and will consist of love letters written by some truly amazing authors. Danny from Bewitched Bookworms and I will each be hosting different letters every week (hop over there today for a little something special from Paula Stokes!), so be sure and check out both blogs for a bigger and better celebration of all things swoon-worthy. We'll also be hosting a fantastic giveaway, so don't forget to check the bottom of the post for all the details, as well as links to all the previous love letters in case you didn't get to them!

Today I'm thrilled to welcome Melissa Landers back to the blog to share with us a letter from Aelyx (he's a love letter first-timer!) to Cara, the–quite literally–starcrossed couple from her Alienated series. I have a bit of an Ohio theme going on with the event this year, with Kristen, Mindee, Melissa, Emery, and Sara all either currently living in or from Ohio, so I've been lucky enough to fangirl at all of them in person. Melissa was forced to endure my gushing during an interview last year, and thankfully I didn't scare her enough to make her want to run and hide when I approached her about participating. *pats self on back* If you haven't had the chance to read Alienated or Invaded yet, I hope you add them to your lists after reading Aelyx's letter!

Dearest Elire,

You might not believe this—or maybe you will—but I’ve never written a love letter before. Until now, there was no reason to. My heart has only ever belonged to you, and we both know that a pen and paper can’t compete with Silent Speech. But as much as I’d like to look into your eyes and show you how I feel, I can’t do that with multiple galaxies stretched between us. So for now, I suppose a note will have to do.

Gods alive, Cara, I miss you.

I miss the freckles on your cheeks, and the ones sprinkled across the bridge of your nose. I miss the way your eyes crinkle at the edges when you smile at me. I miss the scent of citrus in your hair and the sound of my name on your lips. I swear your presence is like a second sun, and without you, the air actually feels colder. (And trust me—winter in Manhattan is already miserable.) So wherever you are on L’eihr, please know that you are cherished.

I promise to mend this alliance as quickly as I can, and soon we’ll stand together on the shores of our colony and watch the stars, just like we did on board the transport. Our time apart is only a hiccup—you told me that once. I hope you still feel that way, and that you think of me every time you gaze at the night sky. You can’t see me, but I’m here. And I’m yours.

Much love,
Aelyx

These letters are brutal! *pounces on Aelyx and gives him a hug* Hopefully he and Cara find their way back to one another soon before I develop an ulcer from the stress of their separation ;-)

ALIENATED
Alienated #1

Two years ago, the aliens made contact. Now Cara Sweeney is going to be sharing a bathroom with one of them.

Handpicked to host the first-ever L’eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she’ll have inside information about the mysterious L’eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara’s blog following is about to skyrocket.

Still, Cara isn’t sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L’eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn’t seem more alien. She’s certain about one thing, though: no human boy is this good-looking.

But when Cara's classmates get swept up by anti-L'eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn't safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara's locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class.

Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn’t just her only friend; she's fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life—not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet.

INVADED
Alienated #2

Cara always knew life on planet L’eihr would be an adjustment. With Aelyx, her L’eihr boyfriend, back on Earth, working to mend the broken alliance between their two planets, Cara is left to fend for herself at a new school, surrounded by hostile alien clones. Even the weird dorm pet hates her.

Things look up when Cara is appointed as human representative to a panel preparing for a human colony on L’eihr. A society melding their two cultures is a place where Cara and Aelyx could one day make a life together. But with L’eihr leaders balking at granting even the most basic freedoms, Cara begins to wonder if she could ever be happy on this planet, even with Aelyx by her side.

Meanwhile, on Earth, Aelyx, finds himself thrown into a full-scale PR campaign to improve human-L’eihr relations. Humans don’t know that their very survival depends on this alliance: only Aelyx’s people have the technology to fix the deadly contamination in the global water supply that human governments are hiding. Yet despite their upper hand, the leaders of his world suddenly seem desperate to get humans on their side, and hardly bat an eye at extremists’ multiple attempts on Aelyx’s life.

The Way clearly needs humans’ help . . . but with what? And what will they ask for in return?

Rogue Wave Blog Tour: Which Mermaid Are You?

http://waterfiresaga.com/

Today I'm thrilled to welcome author Jennifer Donnelly to the blog as part of the promotional tour for the latest book in the Waterfire Saga, Rogue Wave. I don't know about all of you, but when I was younger my lifelong goal was to become a mermaid like Ariel, and I fully admit without shame that said goal hasn't completely faded with time. Suffice to say, I'm a fan of mermaids. *dreams of abandoning work and moving to the ocean where I can wear pretty sea silk dresses and have a tail of sparkly, scaly gorgeousness*

Jennifer is here to introduce her merls to those who haven't yet started this series, and to give those who've already met these ladies a few additional personality details and juicy tidbits. Below her post is a fantastic quiz that will tell you which of Jennifer's merls you're most similar to, so be sure and check it out and leave your answer in the comments!

Can I tell you how much I love my merls Sera, Neela, Ava, Ling, Becca, and Astrid? I say “my” not because I wrote them, but because they’re mine like my girlfriends are mine. They’re my merlfriends, and I love talking to them, adventuring with them, hanging with them.
Sera and I can talk for hours. We’d be up all night talking if I didn’t have to get up for work. She is so smart and so tough and so brave . . . but she is so plagued by self-doubt. I spend a lot of time reassuring her—but what’s really happening the whole time is that she is inspiring me!
Neela’s my fashion merl. She is GORGEOUS! What I wouldn’t give for her beautiful skin and her thick, lustrous hair. I’m totally jealous! But she’s always there for me on the days I look really blah in the mirror, winking over my shoulder, fluffing my hair . . . and reminding me that my sparkliest necklace will change everything.

Ava is crazy perceptive. She can see through anything and anyone. When I feel like I’m not getting the real story, or somebody’s hiding something, or someone’s pretending to be someone they’re not, or someone wants me to be someone I’m not, I get Ava’s perspective—and things are so much clearer.

Ling is the Einstein of the group. Total brainiac. She speaks, like, every language. Seriously: omnis lingua! When I’ve got a complicated problem, she shows me how to focus, cut through all the distractions, consider all the angles, and figure it out.

Becca is all business. She’s my personal drill sergeant! She gets me up to exercise at six a.m. no matter how cold and dark it is out. She makes sure I get my blog posts—and my books—done in time. When there’s work to be done, Becca is there to make sure I’m not off shopping with Neela or up all night talking to Sera . . .

Astrid. Astrid, Astrid, Astrid. Miss Dark Cloud on the Horizon. She questions EVERYTHING. She drives me crazy. And yet, and yet: I’m so happy to have her around. I need a good, skeptical reality check from time to time. She’s also tough as nails—and not afraid to show it. If I’m in a scary place, I feel much safer if she’s nearby. Do NOT mess with this merl.

I love my merls because we share a very deep, unspoken connection. I really know them—and they really know me. Each one is different, but they all have something I relate to very closely, as if they’re a part of me (which, in my case, I suppose they are!).

So I’m a little like all of them. But of all six, I feel the most like Astrid—not the tough-guy merl, but the merl who’s always questioning things. And being the resident PITA.

Which one are you? We have a great little quiz that you (and your merls) can take to find out. I took it, and sure enough: Astrid by a slim margin. Daisy, my fashionista daughter, is like Neela. My husband won’t admit he took the quiz (but I bet he did—and anyway, he’s like Ling).

Take the quiz, and let me know who you are—and why—below. I’ll join the conversation—and who knows? Maybe we’ll hear from Sera, Neela, and the other merls too!

ROGUE WAVE
Waterfire Saga #2

In this exciting sequel to DEEP BLUE, the mermaids are on an exceedingly important and dangerous quest. Their journey is testing their skills and their friendships, forcing them to grow and take on new challenges, and will alter their lives forever.

Serafina, Neela, Ling, Ava, Becca, and Astrid, six mermaids from realms scattered throughout the seas and freshwaters, were summoned by the leader of the river witches to learn an incredible truth: the mermaids are direct descendants of the Six Who Ruled–powerful mages who once governed the lost empire of Atlantis. The ancient evil that destroyed Atlantis is stirring again, and only the mermaids can defeat it. To do so, they need to find magical talismans that belonged to the Six.

Serafina believes her talisman was buried with an old shipwreck. While researching its location, she is almost discovered by a death rider patrol led by someone familiar. . . . The pain of seeing him turned traitor is devastating.

Neela travels to Matali to warn her parents of the grave threat facing their world.  But they find her story outlandish; a sign that she needs to be confined to her chamber for rest and recovery. She escapes and travels to Kandina, where her talisman is in the possession of fearsome razormouth dragons.

As they hunt for their talismans, both Serafina and Neela find reserves of courage and cunning they didn't know they possessed. They face down danger and death, only to endure a game-changing betrayal, as shocking as a rogue wave.

Now, Serafina must embark on a quest to find the assassin’s master and prevent a war between the Mer nations.

This Shattered World Blog Tour: Interview + Giveaway

http://www.themidnightgarden.net/2014/12/thisshatteredworld.html

I'm thrilled today to be a part of the promotional tour for This Shattered World, the second book in the Starbound Trilogy by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner. I fell madly in love with These Broken Stars last year and could barely summon up the patience to wait until This Shattered World released, but somehow I pulled from patience reserves I never knew I had and endured until I was lucky enough to get my hands on a copy. So good.

Now I have the pleasure of welcoming Amie and Meagan back to the blog to answer a few questions, so I hope you all enjoy the interview! Be sure and check out the bottom of the post for all the details on a giveaway as well as the full list of participating blogs.

Given Lee and Flynn are on opposite sides of Avon's rebellion, there's a forbidden aspect to their romance. What are your top three fictional forbidden or starcrossed romances?

Oh, soooooo many to choose from! Given the influence their story had on this book (it’s set on planet Avon, after all), we have to choose Romeo and Juliet. We love a story about secret allies from two warring factions, and the agony of conflicting loyalties that comes with it. (We’re basically awful people. We just like agony.)

We also love the movie 10 Things I Hate About You—also, interestingly enough, a Shakespearean play in film form. There’s just something about their banter that stuck with us, and it’s that back and forth that we always try to give to each of our couples in each book. Especially with Flynn and Jubilee, who get along like matches and gasoline. (Explosively. Also: hot.)

And finally, what better starcrossed romance is there than Elizabeth Bennett and Fitzwilliam Darcy? No one would’ve ever picked those two for a couple, and yet they just end up working. Unlikely couples are our favorites.

If you were to find yourself under Lee's military command, what are a few of the words she might use to describe your physical abilities in her initial evaluation of your combat readiness?

Oh man, you had to ask. Let’s just say we’re both significantly better at writing about great feats of physical prowess than we are at performing them. A few phrases on our personal reports would include ‘noodly-armed’, ‘a danger to themselves and others’, ‘constantly daydreaming’ and ‘too busy talking to take orders’. We would also suck at getting up in time for the morning parade.

If you lived in the world of the Starbound Trilogy–where interstellar travel is commonplace and numerous planets are inhabitable–and found yourself on a previously unknown planet with your dream environment, what would that environment consist of and what would you name your new world?

Oooh, good question! The two things we love to do most together are write stories and go out on road trips, so those would shape our dream planet. We’d find ourselves surrounded by breathtaking scenery—some of our favourite places to explore were the Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Park—though we have to be honest, our dream environment would also involve a comfy house to kick back after our days of exploring.

When we need to work on a story, we love to head somewhere beautiful to walk and brainstorm, whether that’s the luxurious hot springs just outside Melbourne, or the amazing Biltmore Estate outside Asheville. So, sounds like our dream planet would be magnificent in its natural beauty, with just a touch of luxury. And hopefully some very easily harvested food. We’re not survivors like our characters!

What would we call our planet? Home.

Let's say that tomorrow you board a ship for an entirely new planet, with little to no knowledge of what awaits you in terms of food, living conditions, amenities, etc. What one aspect of this world or the comforts of your current life would you miss most?

As outlined above, we really do like our creature comforts! The truth is, though, that we’re both okay roughing it when we need to. As long as we could take our families (and our pets) with us, then the one thing we’d miss most would be our bookshelves! With comfy beds a close second ;)

If Lee and Flynn were told their lives were the subject matter for a piece of fiction, what would their first immediate reactions be? Would they want to read their story?

Flynn would absolutely love it! He comes from a long tradition of Irish storytelling, and one of the things we get to see in This Shattered World is his cousin Sean re-telling an old Irish legend about a couple called Niamh and Oisín, complete with modern touches like space shuttles. Flynn would probably prefer to hear the story told with all the embellishments you could manage, but he’d definitely want to read it too.

Jubilee’s a little more no-nonsense than Flynn (A little? A lot…) and would probably just say that she’s already lived it, she knows how it ends, and she’d rather focus on the future than spend time rehashing the past. That said, she’d probably end up reading it to humor Flynn, and we bet she’d enjoy it, even if she did critique everyone’s tactics.

A huge thank you to Amie and Meagan for taking the time to answer my questions!

THIS SHATTERED WORLD

Jubilee Chase and Flynn Cormac should never have met.

Lee is captain of the forces sent to Avon to crush the terraformed planet's rebellious colonists, but she has her own reasons for hating the insurgents.

Rebellion is in Flynn's blood. Terraforming corporations make their fortune by recruiting colonists to make the inhospitable planets livable, with the promise of a better life for their children. But they never fulfilled their promise on Avon, and decades later, Flynn is leading the rebellion.

Desperate for any advantage in a bloody and unrelentingly war, Flynn does the only thing that makes sense when he and Lee cross paths: he returns to base with her as prisoner. But as his fellow rebels prepare to execute this tough-talking girl with nerves of steel, Flynn makes another choice that will change him forever. He and Lee escape the rebel base together, caught between two sides of a senseless war.
