Etiquette and Espionage Blog Tour: Interview + Giveaway

Today I'm hugely excited to be a part of the promotional tour for the first book in Gail Carriger's new young adult series, Etiquette and Espionage. Each stop on this tour was given a pair of lessons around which to base their interview questions, with one half of the pair focusing on etiquette and the other, shockingly, on espionage. I jumped at the chance to ask Gail all about household management and hand to hand combat, so I hope you all enjoy the interview!

HOUSEHOLD MANAGEMENT AND HAND TO HAND COMBAT

What’s the most important quality to look for when hiring someone for a position within the home?

Smooth running on all rails, a good set of basic protocols, a well-polished exterior, and gears in excellent working order. Oh, did you mean human staff?

Someone has just arrived at the front door completely unannounced and uninvited. What’s the proper response to such a situation?

Send out the butler to make it clear at you are Not At Home to callers.

When facing a larger opponent in hand to hand combat, what’s one thing a person of smaller stature should never do?

Direct attack. Diversion is always a superior approach.

Is there one part of our bodies that most people don’t know makes a great weapon?

The tongue is all too often underestimated.

If you were sent to finishing school, what’s the name of one class at which you would excel?

Tea Parties, Tarts, and Tarting it up for all occasions.

Thanks so much for sharing Gail! More finishing school lessons and information on Gail can be found here:

ETIQUETTE AND ESPIONAGE

It's one thing to learn to curtsy properly. It's quite another to learn to curtsy and throw a knife at the same time. Welcome to Finishing School.

Sophronia Temminnick at 14 is a great trial more interested in dismantling clocks and climbing trees than proper manners -- and the family can only hope that company never sees her atrocious curtsy. Her poor mother, desperate for her daughter to become a proper lady, enrolls the lively tomboy in Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality.

But young ladies learn to finish...everything. Certainly, they learn the fine arts of dance, dress, and etiquette, but they also learn to deal out death, diversion, and espionage -- in the politest possible ways, of course. Sophronia and her friends are in for a rousing first year's education.

    1. I would fail in a fight Danny. I'd kick and claw, but I'd likely not get anywhere:( I have no idea what I'd do with my tongue though - maybe I need to look into that!

  6. Haha, well, I'm reading this now and I'm really enjoying the humor, as well as revisiting the world Carriger created for her Parasol Protectorate books. I really enjoyed those.

I wouldn't mind having a mechanical right about now. The house is in desperate need of very thorough cleaning.:)
Fantastic interview, Jenny! I really enjoyed it.

  7. I want to take the tart class! Sounds like it's right up my alley. And I just started this book last night and it's completely awesome (if I wasn't fighting a sinus infection, which put me in bed at 9pm, I would have stayed up way too late finishing it!).

  9. One of the best interviews ever. Freaking LOVED it.

I don't know why I have been so hesitant to read this one, but now I really, really want to. It sounds so fun and intrigue. And Gail is hysterical. I can only hope her novels are infused with the same humor as her interviews.

Thanks, Jenny! Definitely plan on grabbing this book!

  12. Love this interview, Jenny, your questions are so much fun! :-) I have to agree with Gail, the tongue is such an undervalued weapon!

Don't you just wish you could go to Madame Geraldine's school? I would probably be awful at curtsying like Sophronia, but I would be all over "Tea Parties, Tarts, and Tarting it up for all occasions." :-)

  16. When I saw the wolf, I wondered if I had missed something and was now onto SCARLET. Wolf + steampunk + finishing school + tongue as the most underestimated weapon? Hrmm... I actually own the first of her Parasol Protectorate books but haven't read it, and all the rave reviews for this one make me want to read it too. I guess I should also get my gears in order before I start applying for jobs ;)

  58. As always, exceptional interviewing, Jenny!! Gail sounds like such fun! My favorite answer is absolutely her response to your question about which part of the body is a dangerous weapon most people don't know about :) I have the first book in her other series, Soulless, but STILL haven't had a chance to read it and start the series! Maybe I'll just start with this one and progress up to the adult books. Thanks for the chance to win!
