Daylighters Blog Tour: Saying Goodbye to Morganville

I'm absolutely giddy today to be a part of the promotional tour for Daylighters, the final book in the fantastic Morganville Vampires series. Rachel Caine and the team at Penguin have put together a really fun tour to celebrate the book's upcoming release on November 5th (woo hoo!), so I'm going to let them explain the awesome that is in store for you:

Master storyteller Rachel Caine has her hands full with her bestselling Morganville Vampires novels coming to an end, and a brand new book (a retelling of Romeo and Juliet titled Prince of Shadows) on the way. But with speculation about Daylighters (Nov. 5, 2013), the series finale, at an all time high, she just couldn’t resist dropping some hints. She’ll be stopping by to answer your questions in the comments below, but she can neither confirm nor deny what’s true and what’s not!

RUMOR #2:

A main character goes through a drastic transformation, but is it human to vampire, human to werewolf, or even vampire to human?

From Daylighters:

Something was happening to him. His eyes…

He was changing.
No. She’s forgotten in the crush of events, forgotten what the effect could be if he came face-to-face with a vampire…

...or someone who smelled like one.

He closed his eyes and when they opened, they gleamed acid yellow, with pupils that shrank into vertical slits.

DAYLIGHTERS

While Morganville, Texas, is often a troubled town, Claire Danvers and her friends are looking forward to coming home. But the Morganville they return to isn’t the one they know; it’s become a different place—a deadly one…

Something drastic has happened in Morganville while Claire and her friends were away. The town looks cleaner and happier than they’ve ever seen it before, but when their incoming group is arrested and separated—vampires from humans—they realize that the changes definitely aren’t for the better.

It seems that an organization called the Daylight Foundation has offered the population of Morganville something they’ve never had: hope of a vampire-free future. And while it sounds like salvation—even for the vampires themselves—the truth is far more sinister and deadly.

Now, Claire, Shane and Eve need to find a way to break their friends out of Daylighter custody, before the vampires of Morganville meet their untimely end.

A beloved series coming to a close is always a bit painful, but fear not, more from Rachel Caine is soon to be ours!

(out February 4th!)

Fair Verona is a town thick with secrets.

Benvolio Montague hunts the darkness as the elusive Prince of Shadows, stealing from his arrogant peers. Rosaline Capulet dreams of freedom from the prison of her family and the convent that looms ever closer. Mercutio Ordelaffi hides a forbidden, dangerous love. The collision of their secrets will lead to obsession, tragedy, curses and revenge. Only the Prince of Shadows can unravel the tangle of their fates before it is too late.

  1. I'm about 2 or 3 books behind in the MV series. I guess I can read them back to back now! Yay! Although, I'm sad the series is ending! I'm always a little leery of Romeo and Juliet re-tellings, because I did NOT like the ending! Let's hope Rachel Caine gives us a better one. :)

    1. I'm sad the series is ending too, I have to admit ... but it's time. Fifteen books is a LOT.

Trust me on this one -- I'm NOT changing the ending of the play, but this book is not the play. There's a lot more to it, and it's not really Romeo and Juliet's story. It's Benvolio's, which means there CAN be a happy ending ... luckily! :)

Thanks for the MV love ... I'm sad and excited at the same time about the ending, and can't wait to see what you all think!

    2. I'm playing catch-up with Morganville too. I started the series in college about five years ago and it's bittersweet to reach the end.

  2. Just a few more days and we'll know everything! *dies twice* I've been with this series for so long, I can't believe we'll finally know the fate of our darlings. Mostly I mean Shane and Myrnin, but whatever. :)
Only a few more days to go, but that little excerpt will trouble me until then. *glares*
:)) Thanks for the post, Jenny! I'm super excited.

    1. HEE! Yes, that excerpt is troubling. Some upcoming ones will be MUCH MORE TROUBLING. But you have to trust me: all will be well.

Thank you for the MV love -- you're awesome!

    1. Well, the good news is that when you decide to read them, you'll have all the cliffhangers solved right off the bat! And it's a nice, long run of 15 books ... :)

  5. I'm so terribly behind in this series, but still it's so exciting that it is all coming to an end! That's even more incentive for me to catch up. I have no painful wait between books to complain about now. :-)

Prince of Shadows sounds SO AWESOME. I can't believe there's a story with Mercutio and Benvolio and Rosaline. *dying* Mercutio is my favorite! Can't wait to read this one, thanks for putting it on my radar!

    1. See, I think your "wait until the cliffhanger torture ends" strategy is a winner. Good for you! (And also: sorry.)

I'm SO EXCITED about Prince of Shadows, I can't wait to see what you think! Also, of course, nervous, but I tremendously enjoyed the challenge, and I think Mercutio came out to be one of the favorite characters I've ever written.

  7. Dagnabbit, I wasn't quick enough to get on this tour! I do so love Rachel Caine --- both her adult and her YA stuff. It's all fabulous and so well-written. Sad that this series is drawing to a close but all good things must come to an end...so she can start another kick-arse series!

Thank you so much for the kind words about MV -- it's been so much fun to do, and I'm so delighted that so many people have joined me on this crazy trip.

I will solemnly swear to try to kick more arse. Soon.

  8. I've never read the Morganville Vampire Series because it's so long, but Prince of Shadows sounds very exciting. I can't wait for that one and you know how much I love historical fiction.

Prince of Shadows looks soooo good! Very excited for it. Historical plus paranormal? Win win!

    1. I think it's fun how many people see that MV is ending and realize they've got more to read ... avoid the cliffhangers! Good plan! :)

Thanks for the kind words about Prince of Shadows. I tried to keep my paranormal within Shakespearean bounds: witches, ghosts, curses! :)

  10. *TEAR OF SADNESS* I'm going to miss this book. I loved being a part of this series. I have read this series for such a long time, I don't know what I would do without another book coming out in a few months.

    1. I know what you mean ... it feels really weird right now NOT having an onrushing Morganville deadline. But I do think it was the right time ... I wanted to leave the series where it really was strong and people were still really excited about it. Thank you. I promise to do some short stories to carry you through!

  11. Prince of Shadows sounds fabulous. I can't wait to learn more and I'll definitely head over to read the excerpt. I'm glad that the focus is beyond R&J. I'm adding "Prince" to my tbr now!

  12. Oh man, I can't wait! It's sad that Morganville is ending, but I'm glad the series is ending at the same time. I don't want things to drag out forever! (I'll just be crossing my fingers and hoping my favorites make it out alive-ish.)

  13. I still need to check out the Morganville Vampires series. It sounds fantastic!

Loving the sound of Prince of Shadows, because it sounds like it will have a creative view/twist on the original story (plus, it doesn't hurt that it's focused on Benvolio, Rosaline, and Mercutio - those three have always been my favorite characters in R&J)!

    Nice post!

  14. Thanks, Lea -- I had a fantastic time doing diving into the Shakespearean world. I also tried to be really faithful to the politics and customs and environment of the era, which was VERY interesting to me to research.

And I confess, Mercutio did steal my heart.

  15. Amazing to have 15 books in the series, that is quite an accomplishment! I wonder if the voices of those characters are now quiet in her head and what new voices have taken their places. All the promise for a new series?

    1. I don't know if the old voices go away, but I definitely have a new series I am developing! I am still channeling Prince of Shadows too. Hard to shake that world!

  16. I love LOVE this series and I really don't want it to end... the ending of Fall of Night was a killer for me and I can't wait to read yet devastated it's ending. One of my all time favourite series.... Oh and Shane and Clare.... *fangirling and totally day dreaming* I read it for over five years and its the highlight of my YA addiction. I hope I can find something by Rachel just as eagerly exciting and maybe this Romeo and Juliet re-telling will be it. Brilliant post, Jenny!

  17. I haven't read this series but I've had SO many people tell me I HAVE to read it. I'm kind of glad it is ending that way I can sit with the books, all in a row, and not have to worry about any cliffies! YaY me! :D

Oh and Prince of Shadows looks very interesting. Must add that one to the wishlist!

  18. I have desperately wanted to read this series and I even have the first couple of books, but I just haven't been able to find the time. It is hard when a series gets way ahead of you. You can bet I will be on board for the next series. Like the sound of a Romeo and Juliet spinoff! Can't wait!

    1. Yeah, I hear you, it IS a commitment. :) It might help to know that the first 6 books are an arc, and then it's basically 3 stand alones, then the rest are another arc. Thanks! :)

  19. Oh Prince of Shadows sounds AMAZING! That is going on my MUST READ list! Maybe if I add it now I can actually read it when it comes out. ;)
I LOVE Morganville Vamps, but I've fallen behind. I had read the first several from the library and then fell behind and then started getting them for review. So I have the last several but I know there are a bunch I haven't read yet. So I need to figure out where I left off. Sometimes I get so angry at myself. This is a beloved series so how can I have not kept up?! I guess that's the joy of being a blogger, we just can't keep up with everything.

How great that Rachel has been commenting back! She's an author I would certainly fangirl over if I were to meet her for real. (You hear that Rachel? Come to Portland Oregon, I'll be there to fangirl!)

    1. Hi, Candace! :)

Yeah, man, I hear you about falling behind. As an author, I have the same problem -- SO MANY BOOKS. And writing my own takes up approximately 75% of my available time, and family has to go in there somewhere, so my leisure reading isn't what it ought to be. Very sad. I try to carve out time, and December is my official reading month, but yeah. No shame in it!

I love Portland! I'm hoping to get back there next year, and I hope to meet you when I do. *fangirls a fellow reader*
