Waiting on Wednesday: Poison's Kiss

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine and is a fun way to see what books other bloggers just can't wait to get their hands on!

POISON'S KISS
Breeana Shields
Young Adult/Fantasy
Releases January 2017 from Random House BFYR

From Goodreads:
Marinda has kissed dozens of boys. They all die afterward. It's a miserable life, but being a visha kanya--a poison maiden--is what she was created to do. Marinda serves the Raja by dispatching his enemies with only her lips as a weapon.

Until now, the men she was ordered to kiss have been strangers, enemies of the kingdom. Then she receives orders to kiss Deven, a boy she knows too well to be convinced he needs to die. She begins to question who she's really working for. And that is a thread that, once pulled, will unravel more than she can afford to lose.

This rich, surprising, and accessible debut is based in Indian folklore and delivers a story that will keep readers on the edge of their seats.
Normally when the synopsis for a YA book starts with a line about kissing dozens of boys, I'd be moving right on by as it sounds like a recipe for high angst and romantic drama, BUT, the second sentence above is a game changer. Executing men via kissing sounds miserable indeed, and I'm now infinitely curious about Marinda and how she's going to change her world. Though this sounds like a fairly straightforward YA fantasy with romantic elements at first glance, the Indian folklore aspect is really intriguing and not something I've read much about, so this is on my list for sure!

  2. I love that cover! It does sound like a great premise, but I wonder, would she kill anyone she kisses? That would suck. Great choice, Jenny! :)

  8. I'm not going to lie, I'm petrified of snakes and won't usually click on a book with the cover. (Unless it's an author I already know and love; yes, I'm a wuss when it comes to snakes.) But this looks really good, and it's the Indian lore that I find most interesting about the book, too. I'll be adding this one!

  9. I am so not a fan of that cover because of the snake, BUT, I am really curious to see how the Indian mythology is executed in this one and an assassin who kisses guys to kill them is pretty darn deadly. Thanks for putting this one on my radar, Jenny--you always manage to find titles that I've never heard of, so probably my TBR is growing single-handedly thanks to you! ;)

  10. I'm surprised you featured this Jenny, given the creepy AF snake on the cover O.O In any case, I'm glad you did because this sounds really unique^^ Indian folklore is not one I'm especially familiar with but I'd love to change that - and this premise sounds excellent!

  11. I feel the same way about all those kisses with all those boys and usually it's a deal breaker, but the rest of the description more than makes up for it.

  12. Oh this sounds interesting. I'm with you, I would have run the other way if it wasn't for the rest of the blurb.

  13. Huh, this one got my attention with the second sentence. It almost sounds like an old Bollywood movie that I watched when I was a kid.
