Waiting on Wednesday: By Your Side

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine and is a fun way to see what books other bloggers just can't wait to get their hands on!

Kasie West
Contemporary YA
Releases February 2017 from HarperTeen

From Goodreads:)

When Autumn Collins finds herself accidentally locked in the library for an entire weekend, she doesn’t think things could get any worse. But that’s before she realizes that Dax Miller is locked in with her. Autumn doesn’t know much about Dax except that he’s trouble. Between the rumors about the fight he was in (and that brief stint in juvie that followed it) and his reputation as a loner, he’s not exactly the ideal person to be stuck with. Still, she just keeps reminding herself that it is only a matter of time before Jeff, her almost-boyfriend, realizes he left her in the library and comes to rescue her.

Only he doesn’t come. No one does.

Instead it becomes clear that Autumn is going to have to spend the next couple of days living off vending-machine food and making conversation with a boy who clearly wants nothing to do with her. Except there is more to Dax than meets the eye. As he and Autumn first grudgingly, and then not so grudgingly, open up to each other, Autumn is struck by their surprising connection. But can their feelings for each other survive once the weekend is over and Autumn’s old life, and old love interest, threaten to pull her from Dax’s side?

Kasie West! Her contemporary books always make me smile, and the setup for this one has me especially excited. Sort of a mini Breakfast Club-style feel. I love a relationship that starts with a whole lot of antagonism before turning into something more, and it seems like Autumn and Dax are going to have to wade through quite a few differences before that surprising connection forms, which means this has earned itself a place at the top of my must-have 2017 list:)

Waiting on Wednesday: Hunted

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine and is a fun way to see what books other bloggers just can't wait to get their hands on!

Meagan Spooner
Young Adult/Fantasy/Retelling
Releases March 2017 from HarperTeen

From Goodreads:

Beauty knows the Beast’s forest in her bones—and in her blood. Though she grew up with the city’s highest aristocrats, far from her father’s old lodge, she knows that the forest holds secrets and that her father is the only hunter who’s ever come close to discovering them.

So when her father loses his fortune and moves Yeva and her sisters back to the outskirts of town, Yeva is secretly relieved. Out in the wilderness, there’s no pressure to make idle chatter with vapid baronessas…or to submit to marrying a wealthy gentleman. But Yeva’s father’s misfortune may have cost him his mind, and when he goes missing in the woods, Yeva sets her sights on one prey: the creature he’d been obsessively tracking just before his disappearance.

Deaf to her sisters’ protests, Yeva hunts this strange Beast back into his own territory—a cursed valley, a ruined castle, and a world of creatures that Yeva’s only heard about in fairy tales. A world that can bring her ruin or salvation. Who will survive: the Beauty, or the Beast?

Beauty and the Beast is my all-time favorite fairy tale, so whenever a retelling pops up it takes absolutely no convincing to get me to add it to my must-have list. I'm also a huge fan of Meagan Spooner and Amie Kaufman's Starbound trilogy, so I'm hoping this one blows me away in much the same way. Curses, ruined castles, and a beauty vs. beast plotline? YES PLEASE!

Waiting on Wednesday: Long May She Reign

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine and is a fun way to see what books other bloggers just can't wait to get their hands on!

Rhiannon Thomas
Young Adult/Fantasy
Releases February 2017 from HarperTeen

From Goodreads:
Freya was never meant to be queen. Twenty third in line to the throne, she never dreamed of a life in the palace, and would much rather research in her laboratory than participate in the intrigues of court. However, when an extravagant banquet turns deadly, and the king and his courtiers are poisoned, Freya suddenly finds herself on the throne.

Freya may have survived the massacre, but she is far from safe. The nobles don’t respect her, her councillors want to control her, and with the mystery of who killed the king still unsolved, Freya knows that a single mistake could cost her the kingdom – and her life.

Freya is determined to survive, and that means uncovering the murderers herself. Until then, she can’t trust anyone. Not her advisors. Not the king’s dashing and enigmatic illegitimate son. Not even her own father, who always wanted the best for her, but also wanted more power for himself.

First, pretty cover is pretty. I have no idea what the futuristic tentacle-like wires of smoke and magic are at the bottom, but they intrigue me, as does the castle in a bottle. Story-wise, I love that Freya had absolutely no illusions that she would sit on the throne given there were 22 people in line before her, so I feel like she'll be a true underdog in the viper's pit that is court politics. There's nothing I like more than rooting for an underdog (except of course romance – hello, there king's dashing and enigmatic illegitmate son!), so I'm starting my countdown for this one already. Please come faster February!

Review: Ruined

RUINED
Ruined #1
Amy Tintera
Young Adult/Fantasy

THE STORY (from Goodreads)
A revenge that will consume her. A love that will ruin her.

Emelina Flores has nothing. Her home in Ruina has been ravaged by war. She lacks the powers of her fellow Ruined. Worst of all, she witnessed her parents’ brutal murders and watched helplessly as her sister, Olivia, was kidnapped.

But because Em has nothing, she has nothing to lose. Driven by a blind desire for revenge, Em sets off on a dangerous journey to the enemy kingdom of Lera. Somewhere within Lera’s borders, Em hopes to find Olivia. But in order to find her, Em must infiltrate the royal family.

In a brilliant, elaborate plan of deception and murder, Em marries Prince Casimir, next in line to take Lera’s throne. If anyone in Lera discovers Em is not Casimir’s true betrothed, Em will be executed on the spot. But it’s the only way to salvage Em’s kingdom and what is left of her family.

Em is determined to succeed, but the closer she gets to the prince, the more she questions her mission. Em’s rage-filled heart begins to soften. But with her life—and her family—on the line, love could be Em’s deadliest mistake.

MY THOUGHTS
Ruined is a tale strong in story, with an easy flow that allows for the rapid turning of pages as we follow Em's journey to find her sister and unleash vengeance on those who murdered her parents.

Em, despite the need for revenge driving her initially and the ease with which she murders the young woman whose place she's taking, is a young woman with whom it's easy to settle in. She despises the royal family for systematically executing the Ruined and kidnapping her sister, but she easily keeps her rage in check and uses her time in the castle and with Cas wisely. She's also not so blinded by her hatred that she refuses to see the differences between Cas and his father, nor is she unable to acknowledge that neither side of their war has hands clean of blood. Her romance with Cas is thankfully insta-love free, an arranged marriage slowly shifting into a begrudging friendship and then finally genuine feelings, but we're spared the bold declarations of love that can often read as disingenuous.

While there's much to enjoy about this first installment, especially for those who just want to be entertained, many will likely take issue with the overall lack of world-building and history of the Ruined. We're given almost no backstory on Em's people other than fleeting glimpses here and there of an all-powerful queen who was a monster in the truest sense, and very little information on how the Ruined magic came to be, why no other race of people in this world possess any kind of magical abilities, or how the war between kingdoms started. Hopefully book two will delve deeper into Ruined history and highlight Em's mom in particular, as she was a special kind of nightmare who has the potential to be hugely memorable should we get to take a closer look at her.

Even with a distinct lack of history in this first book, there's still something deeply intriguing about Ruined, the crowns on both sides of the battle equally deserving of the title of villain, thereby ensuring we question who is and is not deserving of our loyalty throughout.

Story/Characters: 4/5
World-building/History: 3/5

Cathy Reviews: The Girl From Everywhere

My mother in law Cathy is back today sharing her latest review!

THE GIRL FROM EVERYWHERE
The Girl From Everywhere #1
Heidi Heilig
Young Adult/Time Travel
464 pages
Greenwillow Books
Available Now
Source: Finished copy from publisher for review

THE STORY (from Goodreads)
Nix has spent her entire life aboard her father’s ship, sailing across the centuries, across the world, across myth and imagination.

As long as her father has a map for it, he can sail to any time, any place, real or imagined: nineteenth-century China, the land from One Thousand and One Nights, a mythic version of Africa. Along the way they have found crewmates and friends, and even a disarming thief who could come to mean much more to Nix.

But the end to it all looms closer every day.

Her father is obsessed with obtaining the one map, 1868 Honolulu, that could take him back to his lost love, Nix’s mother. Even though getting it—and going there—could erase Nix’s very existence.

For the first time, Nix is entering unknown waters.

She could find herself, find her family, find her own fantastical ability, her own epic love.

Or she could disappear.

CATHY'S THOUGHTS
The Girl from Everywhere is Heidi Heilig's debut YA novel, one combining myth, time travel and historical fiction together in a single story. The book is packed with descriptive information and a compelling plotline. Our heroine is 16 year old Nix who travels through time and space aboard the ship, Temptation, with her father and a motley crew that they have collected over the centuries.

In this first book, the main plot is centered on Nix's father's desire to go back in time to when her mother was still alive. This causes contention between the two because Nix is unsure if this trip might literally be her last. There is plenty of angst between the pair even if they are time travelers and Nix secretly plots to run away.

What is unique in this novel is the use of maps. For the Temptation to travel anywhere, there is lots of wheeling and dealing and historical intrigue in order to get a map. While the concept of the maps is very clever, it was also the most challenging aspect of the story for me personally. I wasn't quite sure exactly how all the time travel and transporting worked. It was a little confusing, but at the back of the book Ms. Heilig included an author's note that gave all the details of the myths and history that she had researched and incorporated. I wish I had known this was there and read it first, as I think it might have made some of the plot flow more smoothly.

Ms. Heilig does develop the characters with enough depth that we like and care about them. She has included a possible love interest for Nix, Kashmir. He is the best friend, but there are feelings there and we know there is more to come, which is great because this is the first book in the series. As the Temptation sails from Hawaii, we have to wait to see where the next map will take them.

Rating: 3.5/5

Waiting on Wednesday: Three Dark Crowns

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine and is a fun way to see what books other bloggers just can't wait to get their hands on!

Kendare Blake
YA Fantasy
Releases September 2016 from HarperTeen

From Goodreads:

In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose...it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins.

The last queen standing gets the crown.

Ummm. I feel like all I really need to say about this one is YES PLEASE! This story sounds like a fantasy Tudor court meets the Borgia family and I can't wait to dive into all the scheming and politics involved in battling for the crown. WHICH SISTER AM I GOING TO ROOT FOR? At the moment I'm leaning toward Katharine simply because she seems to be a bit of an underdog - not sure how helpful being able to withstand poisons will be unless someone is actively trying to poison her, and given her sisters are probably aware of this gift, it doesn't seem like they'd choose this method to take her down. Both Mirabella and Arsinoe seem to have more active gifts, so Katharine seems to be at the biggest disadvantage and that earns her my initial support.

Also, Kendare Blake is the author which makes adding this to the TBR list a no brainer.

Given that YA fantasy is my very favorite genre and I thoroughly enjoyed Amy's Reboot series, this book went on my list the minute Epic Reads revealed the cover. I have to admit to being deeply intrigued at the mention of Em's marriage to the prince as there aren't too many YA books out there that explore a married relationship. While this particular marriage is clearly a stepping stone in the path of a much larger plan, I still think the dynamics could be fascinating. Sign me up for a story of love and revenge!

Interview: Mikaela Everett + The Unquiet

Today I have the pleasure of welcoming author Mikaela Everett to the blog to answer a few questions about her debut novel, The Unquiet. I've always been fascinated by the idea of parallel universes or duplicate worlds, so I got a little excited to bombard Mikaela with questions and poke around in her mind, and she was a good enough sport to let me:) I hope you guys enjoy the interview!

In The Unquiet, every person has a duplicate in another version of Earth. If you ever came face to face with a duplicate version of yourself, what’s the first thing you’d want to know about the life she’s lived?

Great question! I’d probably ask something deep and philosophical like “Are you happy?” I would also ask about the different turning points in my life - to see if she chose differently and how things worked out for her. And then smaller things like, did she keep playing the piano after fifth grade, and is she an expert pianist because of it? Did she also huddle in the corners of libraries reading books that were probably too advanced for her, and is she a book lover because of it? Is she a writer because of it? I’d want to know if we could recognize each other beyond our similar outward appearances - whether inside we’d be the same or different people.

The idea that someone could come in and steal your life without those closest to you even noticing is absolutely terrifying. What would Lirael say are the top three qualities that make the perfect sleeper soldier?

The ability to kill, the ability to hide your emotions, and the desire to stay alive at all costs.

If a friend came to you tomorrow talking about the existence of a duplicate Earth, how long would it take you to believe them?

Not long at all! I think all authors secretly believe that the worlds they create just might be real, somewhere well beyond their imaginations. And it’s not that hard with The Unquiet, given how little we know about space and what is out there.

What’s one small quirk or habit you have that would hopefully tip your family and friends off that your duplicate has taken over when she doesn’t exhibit it?

If my duplicate likes bananas, or is a cat person, those are dead giveaways!

If instead of a duplicate Earth there was realm after realm wherein the worlds of any and every piece of fiction existed, which realm would you most want to visit?

I don’t know that I’d last five minutes in either, but the worlds of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings seem like pretty good places to be. Like almost everybody else, I grew up in those worlds. And I wouldn’t just want to be a spectator in either. Wherever there’s a battle, count me in—wand or sword in hand! (Hence the “wouldn’t last five minutes” part).

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions Mikaela!

THE UNQUIET

For most of her life, Lirael has been training to kill—and replace—a duplicate version of herself on a parallel Earth. She is the perfect sleeper-soldier. But she’s beginning to suspect she is not a good person.

The two Earths are identical in almost every way. Two copies of every city, every building, even every person. But the people from the second Earth know something their duplicates do not—two versions of the same thing cannot exist. They—and their whole planet—are slowly disappearing. Lira has been trained mercilessly since childhood to learn everything she can about her duplicate, to be a ruthless sleeper-assassin who kills that other Lirael and steps seamlessly into her life.

An intricate, literary stand-alone from an astonishing new voice, The Unquiet takes us deep inside the psyche of a strong teenage heroine struggling with what she has been raised to be and who she really is. Fans of eerily futuristic and beautifully crafted stories such as Never Let Me Go, Orphan Black, and Fringe will find themselves haunted by this unsettling debut.

Dreamland Blog Tour + Giveaway!

Today I'm hugely excited to be a part of the promotional tour for Dreamland, a debut novel from author Robert L. Anderson. Since Dreamland deals with the world of dreams (obviously), I thought it might be fun to ask protagonist Dea to name a few fictional characters whose sleeping minds she'd like a peek at, and I so approve of her choices:) Be sure and check the bottom of the post as well for the full list of participating blogs as well as your chance to win a copy of Dreamland!

A Look Inside: If Dea could take a peek at the dreams of either 3 fictional characters or 3 real people (alive or dead), whose sleeping minds would she most like to see/learn from?
  • Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games)—Katniss’s post-arena dreams must be insane and frightening, but I can’t help but want to take a look. I imagine it’d be a lot like a soldier’s nightmares except with more insane creations from the Capital. It also feels like a crime peeking into Katniss’s dreams considering the abusive voyeurism of the Games itself, but I’m going in!

  • Luna Lovegood (Harry Potter)—If Luna is that dreamy when she’s awake, I’d love a recess in her mind to witness how her imagination explodes in the limitless dream realm.

  • Gollum (Lord of the Rings)—Gollum has seen A LOT and A LOT of what Gollum has seen is disturbing. Sign me up?

Best-case scenario: Inspiration for more books and art.

    Worst-case scenario: Insane asylum.

DREAMLAND

Odea Donahue has been able to travel through people’s dreams since she was six years old. Her mother taught her the three rules of walking: Never interfere. Never be seen. Never walk the same person’s dream more than once. Dea has never questioned her mother, not about the rules, not about the clocks or the mirrors, not about moving from place to place to be one step ahead of the unseen monsters that Dea’s mother is certain are right behind them.

Then a mysterious new boy, Connor, comes to town and Dea finally starts to feel normal. As Connor breaks down the walls that she’s had up for so long, he gets closer to learning her secret. For the first time she wonders if that’s so bad. But when Dea breaks the rules, the boundary between worlds begins to deteriorate. How can she know what’s real and what’s not?

Sweet Temptation Blog Tour: Love Letter to Kaidan Rowe + A Giveaway!

Today I have the pleasure of slipping into complete fangirl mode as part of the promotional tour for Sweet Temptation, the fourth book in the outstanding Sweet series by Wendy Higgins. I couldn't love this series (or Wendy!) more if I tried, and most of that love is dedicated to one Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, drummer for the band Lascivious, and the man responsible for all the drool marks on the pages of my books. To honor my obsession with Kaidan (and to convince all of you who have yet to meet him to pick Sweet Temptation up immediately) I decided to write him a letter. Gushing will commence in 3, 2, 1....

Dear Kaidan,

Today is my 8th wedding anniversary, and instead of writing this love letter to my husband, I'm writing it to you. I think that says a little something about the depth of my feelings where you're concerned. (Don't read this Kevin!)

We met 3 years ago (and by we I mean
I met you, you were somewhat distracted by Anna at the time which I'm going to choose to ignore in favor of my preferred delusion wherein you love me instead) and there was no looking back. You're the type of boy that never fails to tie me up in emotional knots; a fundamentally good guy forced into a bad position, continually riding a razor's edge where the slightest of movements could tip you over and send you plummeting to a place redemption can't reach.

You'd probably read this and laugh at me for calling you a fundamentally good guy, and then you'd follow that up with a suggestive comment (or twelve) to try and prove how much you love being the son of the Duke of Lust, but we've spent too much time together now for me to fall for it. (Though if you want to turn on the charm and flirt me into an embarrassingly deep blush, don't let me stop you.)

While you undoubtedly have enjoyed many of your assignments (I block these out - see aforementioned preferred delusion), I know there are some that haunt you, that have left their indelible mark and eat away at you in those quiet moments when the echoing drumbeats of Lascivious have long faded into the night. It's that mark that makes me love you. It shows that you're a fighter; stronger than the darkness of the Dukes hammering you from all sides. It's proof that who you've been isn't all you can be, and it makes me indescribably happy to know that my love (or Anna's, whichever) has helped you see that there's more to you than a legacy of lust.

With all my heart,

Jenny

SWEET TEMPTATION

Bad boy Kaidan Rowe has never wanted for anything—money, popularity, musical talent…hot girls—but seducing them is part of his duty as a Nephilim, slave to the demon Dukes. As the son of the Duke of Lust, Kaidan has learned his father’s ways, becoming a master of passion, a manipulator of chemistry. Disobeying his father would mean certain death. Thankfully for Kaidan, he’s good at his job. And he enjoys it.

Until he meets Anna Whitt—sweet, smart, feisty, and inexplicably good—the one girl seemingly immune to his charms. The daughter of a guardian angel and a fallen one, she has a certain power over him, one that makes him wish for more than he could ever deserve.

Determined to save all the Neph from their dark lives as the influencers of sin, Anna joins forces with Kaidan to overcome the demons’ oppressive ways. In the light of her affections, Kaidan must undergo his toughest test of all, a battle of the heart.

Sensual and swoon worthy, this companion volume to the acclaimed Sweet Evil series from New York Times bestselling author Wendy Higgins, told from the perspective of the irresistibly sexy and mysterious Kaidan Rowe, gives readers revealing insights into his struggle, his intense connection to Anna, and most of all, the true emotions that drive him.

Interview + Giveaway: Robin Benway + Emmy and Oliver

I'm so pleased today to welcome author Robin Benway to the blog to answer a few questions about her newest release, Emmy & Oliver. Those of you who read this blog with any frequency know I'm a sucker for all things romance, and one of my very favorite types of romances is one where the couple starts out as best friends, so as soon as I read the synopsis (even though the focus clearly isn't on the romance, but my one-track mind zeroed right in on it anyway) for Emmy & Oliver I knew it was something I had to read. Be sure and check below the interview for a chance to win exciting upcoming HarperTeen titles, and don't forget to follow the tour for more Emmy & Oliver awesomeness!

In Emmy & Oliver, Oliver has to face the brutal realization that his father wasn’t the man he thought he was. Once he learned he’d be returning home after ten years away, what’s one question Oliver would say he was most dreading having to answer?

Oliver wouldn’t want to answer any questions about his dad. Like, at all. He’s so protective of his dad, even though he did this terrible thing, because he grew up with him and loved him. They were best friends, and in his mind, Oliver is still trying to figure out how he feels about everything. He can barely talk to himself about his dad, much less anyone else. The pain and betrayal he feels is so overwhelming that he can’t put it into words.

If Emmy could have gotten a message to Oliver at any point in the time they were apart, what would she have wanted him to know?

I think she would have told him how much his mom missed him, and how she spent all of her time looking for her son. Emmy grows up next door to Oliver’s mom, so she can see the pain she’s in, and it’s so hard to witness.

If you ever found yourself with feelings for a close friend, would you be the type to say something and try to shift the relationship to something more, or would you be the type to suffer in silence and hope the other person made the first move?

HAHAHAHA I wouldn’t have said A WORD. That secret would go with me to the grave. Not that I think that that’s the best plan, but especially as a teenager, I was shy and would have never made the first move, especially with a friend. I’m pretty good at suffering in silence.

If Emmy and Oliver were sitting in front of you and you had the chance to tell them how their story affected you, what would the first words out of your mouth be?

I would tell them how brave they were, and then I would thank them for letting me tell their story. And then we would go to the beach together.

Thanks so much for answering my questions Robin!

EMMY & OLIVER

Emmy’s best friend, Oliver, reappears after being kidnapped by his father ten years ago. Emmy hopes to pick up their relationship right where it left off. Are they destined to be together? Or has fate irreparably driven them apart?

Emmy just wants to be in charge of her own life.

She wants to stay out late, surf her favorite beach—go anywhere without her parents’ relentless worrying. But Emmy’s parents can’t seem to let her grow up—not since the day Oliver disappeared.

Oliver needs a moment to figure out his heart.

He’d thought, all these years, that his dad was the good guy. He never knew that it was his father who kidnapped him and kept him on the run. Discovering it, and finding himself returned to his old hometown, all at once, has his heart racing and his thoughts swirling.

Emmy and Oliver were going to be best friends forever, or maybe even more, before their futures were ripped apart. In Emmy’s soul, despite the space and time between them, their connection has never been severed. But is their story still written in the stars? Or are their hearts like the pieces of two different puzzles—impossible to fit together?

Readers who love Sarah Dessen will tear through these pages with hearts in throats as Emmy and Oliver struggle to face the messy, confusing consequences of Oliver’s father’s crime. Full of romance, coming-of-age emotion, and heartache, these two equally compelling characters create an unforgettable story.

Author Interview: Maria Dahvana Headley + Magonia

I'm so pleased today to welcome author Maria Dahvana Headley to the blog to answer a few questions about her newest release, Magonia. I tried to reach through my computer screen and yank this book into my grabby little hands the minute I saw its gorgeous cover, and now that it's out I can't wait to dive in and explore all this world has to offer. I hope you all enjoy the interview!

One of my favorite things about the fantasy genre is the world-building and the way it showcases the limitless nature of an author's creativity. If you could go on a YA fantasy world-hop, spending a few days in one world before bouncing to the next, which three fictional worlds would top your list to visit?

Ooh, what a great question. I'm gonna grab a classic world first, out of Peter Pan. I have a lot of objections to Neverland - and part of what caused me to write Magonia was that I've never gotten over being aggravated about what happens to Wendy. I always wanted to be Peter, or at least Tinkerbelle, but even Tinkerbelle has a rotten time and nearly dies. Neverland is a crummy place for girls. It's also a crummy place for people of color. The only people who really have a good time there are white boys. Ah, classic fantasy. There is so much wrong in it, but I'm still seduced by the magic of Peter Pan. I mean, come on, they fly out a bedroom window in London, and end up in a sky kingdom. So if I was visiting, well, I might have to kick some ass. It wouldn't necessarily be a vacation. I'd be starting a Neverland revolution. Next I'd like to visit the utterly weird Moby Dick-based world China Mieville's makes in Railsea, partially because I helped fiddle with that world when it was in draft! I'm pretty smitten by the giant moles instead of whales, and by the edge of the map he ends up at, the actual sea rather than a country crisscrossed by trains and rails. It's so awesome. The Railsea world clearly informed Magonia - though Magonia is a skysea. China helped me tons on it, and if you were to read both of the books in succession, you'd probably be able to see where we worked on each other's worlds. Magonia is dedicated to him, so it's only fair that if I were world touring, I'd visit his world too. Damn, apparently I'm visiting middle grade worlds. Hmm. Let's go Through the Looking Glass. I can't help it. I've always wanted to go there. In this trip, I wanted to visit wildly fantastical places, not so much dystopia. I've read some amazing dystopic worlds too, but I think I'm feeling that long winter we just had in NYC, and now I want to visit places with spectacular monsters and creatures. Lewis Carroll's world obviously is full of wonders and surprises. I love being startled by weirdness.

In Magonia, Aza is no longer plagued by the lung disease that crippled her in her world. What's one thing she would say she learned about herself once she was free of the illness that was such a defining part of her life?

A major illness can function as a fence around your activities, and though you can be really tough within the fence, it's a different matter when the fence is gone. So Aza, I think, learns to be strong outside the boundaries she's been controlled by before. She enters a much larger arena, which requires much more strength and drive. Previously, she had limits, and in Magonia, she doesn't. For the first time in her life, she has to choose things actively.

One of my favorite types of romances is one that begins between longtime friends like Jason and Aza. What is your all-time favorite best friend romance?

Hmmm. I think the one that influenced me most here is the one between Meg Murray and Calvin O' Keefe in Madeleine L'engle's Wrinkle In Time series. I read those when I was small, and they busted me for any other kind of romance. At the beginning of the story, Meg is an angry mess of brain and rage who comes from a loving family, and Calvin is a popular athlete who comes from a painful family, and they bond over braininess. Pretty much from the get-go, Calvin can see Meg clearly, even though she initially dislikes and mistrusts him. Their friendship is a total collaboration of equals, though later in the story things go rather skewed, in terms of gender roles. I love the beginning of their friendship/romance. That made me expect more from boys who met my strange self. I always wanted boys who could see my brain. That's what Jason sees in Aza, and it's what Aza sees in Jason too.

I'm fairly confident I would be an absolute mess on a ship, regardless of whether it was sailing the seas or skies, as likely to send myself overboard as anyone else. Graceful, party of one. If you had to work on one of the trading ships of Magonia, what set of skills would you bring to the table (or not, if you're anything like me ;-)?

I guess I could potentially become a tattoo artist. Sailor tattoos are a thing, and I have a steady hand and a notable weird fearlessness when it comes to permanent ink. I have a lot of tattoos myself. I even have a sea monster.

If tomorrow someone close to you pulled you aside and told you they knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that another world besides ours existed, what would your initial reaction be and what's one thing you would hope this other world has that ours doesn't?

I'd say yes, and I would want to visit immediately, provided the parallel world were not, say, Hell. Oh, I'd even visit Hell, who am I kidding. I'm interested in hell. I'm the kind of person who goes to magic shows and doesn't want to know how the magic tricks are done. I prefer to just believe they're actually magic. A friend of mine recently referred to my version of New York as Narniyork, and that's pretty accurate. I see parallel universes everywhere I go. But if there really was another world beside ours, man, let it have equality between its people. I wish that weren't something that was considered utopian, but was just basic. We're not even close yet.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my questions Maria!

MAGONIA

Aza Ray is drowning in thin air.

Since she was a baby, Aza has suffered from a mysterious lung disease that makes it ever harder for her to breathe, to speak—to live.

So when Aza catches a glimpse of a ship in the sky, her family chalks it up to a cruel side effect of her medication. But Aza doesn't think this is a hallucination. She can hear someone on the ship calling her name.

Only her best friend, Jason, listens. Jason, who’s always been there. Jason, for whom she might have more-than-friendly feelings. But before Aza can consider that thrilling idea, something goes terribly wrong. Aza is lost to our world—and found, by another. Magonia.

Above the clouds, in a land of trading ships, Aza is not the weak and dying thing she was. In Magonia, she can breathe for the first time. Better, she has immense power—and as she navigates her new life, she discovers that war is coming. Magonia and Earth are on the cusp of a reckoning. And in Aza’s hands lies the fate of the whole of humanity—including the boy who loves her. Where do her loyalties lie?

Interview + Giveaway: Rachel Hawthorne

I couldn't be more excited today to welcome author Rachel Hawthorne to the blog as part of the promotional tour (thanks Hannah!) for her recent contemporary YA releases, Trouble from the Start and The Boyfriend Project. Rachel was nice enough to answer a few questions for me about her characters, romance, and reading locations, so I hope you all enjoy! Be sure and check the bottom of the post too for a fantastic giveaway as well as a list of participating blogs so you can follow along on the tour:)

To help us get to know Kendall, Jeremy, Fletcher and Avery a little bit better, what one word might each of them use to describe the other three?

Avery would describe Fletcher as trouble, Kendall as loyal, and Jeremy as dependable.
Fletcher would describe Avery as brainy, Kendall as serious, Jeremy as conservative.
Kendall would describe Avery as a Yorkie, Fletcher as a mutt, Jeremy as a golden-retriever. (Cheated a bit there with the 1-word answers but Kendall’s world revolves around dogs.)
Jeremy would describe Kendall as orderly, Avery as fun, Fletcher as tough.

If you could be the leading lady in your own sweet romance and could choose which author penned your story, whose interpretation of your fictional relationship would you be most curious to read?

What a great question! I’m a huge fan of Sophie Jordan’s young adult novels. They’re always different with a bit of a twist so I would love to see what she would do with a sweet romance where I’m the leading lady.

While I love reading a good romance any time of the year, I'm especially drawn to them during the summer months when I can sit outdoors with a goofy smile on my face. Please name three places that would be the perfect setting for a reader to pick up Trouble from the Start or The Boyfriend Project.

Stretched out on a towel on a sandy beach
Snuggled up in a cabin in the mountains
Curled up in bed
If one of your characters could turn the tables on you and write a story based on your teenage years, what would the title of that book be?
Going Nowhere, Doing Nothing (my teenage years were pretty boring)
Which three characters would top your all-time favorite list of bad boys?
Fletcher Thomas from Trouble from the Start
Sean O’Rourke from Sophie Jordan’s Uninvited
Alex Fuentes from Simone Elkeles’s Perfect Chemistry

Thanks so much for stopping by Rachel!

TROUBLE FROM THE START

One of two companion novels from beach-read favorite Rachel Hawthorne, this cute, romantic paperback original is about a good girl who falls for a bad guy.

Avery knows better than to fall for Fletcher, the local bad boy who can’t seem to outrun his reputation. Fletcher knows he shouldn’t bother with college-bound, daughter-of-a-cop Avery. But when their paths cross, neither can deny the spark. Are they willing to go against everything and let their hearts lead the way? Or are they just flirting with disaster?

Trouble from the Start releases simultaneously with companion novel The Boyfriend Project. These heartwarming paperback originals are the perfect summer reads, great for fans of Jennifer Echols, Lauren Barnholdt, and Susane Colasanti.

THE BOYFRIEND PROJECT

Perfect for fans of Stephanie Perkins, Lauren Barnholdt, and Susane Colasanti, The Boyfriend Project is a romantic read about a girl who wishes her sweet boyfriend had a little more edge.

Kendall and her boyfriend, Jeremy, have been together forever, and Kendall is starting to wonder if Jeremy is a little boring. . . . So she embarks on a boyfriend makeover. But as Jeremy learns to strut his stuff, other girls start to notice him and, what's worse, he's noticing them back. Then Jeremy breaks up with Kendall and she realizes her makeover project was the ultimate disaster. Is the sweet boyfriend she loved gone forever?

A companion novel to Rachel Hawthorne's paperback original Trouble from the Start, this title is perfect for fans of summer beach reads and sweet treats.

RACHEL HAWTHORNE

Rachel Hawthorne, who also writes as Lorraine Heath and Jade Parker, is the daughter of a British beauty (her mother won second place in a beauty contest sponsored by Max Factor® during which she received a kiss from Caesar Romero-who played the Joker on the old Batman TV series) and a Texan who was stationed at Bovingdon while serving in the air force. Lorraine was born in Watford, Herts, England, but soon after moved to Texas. Her "dual" nationality has given her a love for all things British and Texan. She enjoys weaving both heritages through her stories.

When she received her BA degree in psychology from the University of Texas, she had no idea she had gained a foundation that would help her to create believable characters—characters that are often described as “real people.” She writes for both adult and young adult readers. She received a Romantic Times Career Achievement Award for Americana historicals. Her novels have been recognized with a RITA, Romance Writers of America’s most prestigious award for excellence, a HOLT medallion award honoring outstanding literary fiction, a Romantic Times Reviewer’s Choice Award, five Texas Gold Awards, the Golden Quill Award, the Rising Star Award as well as other awards and recognitions. Her novels have been selections of the Doubleday and Rhapsody Book Club. Her novels have appeared on bestseller lists, including USA Today, Waldenbooks, and most recently, the New York Times.
