Character Interview: Jael from Misfit

Today I'm excited to share with you my interview with Jael from Jon Skovron's paranormal young adult novel Misfit as part of the promotional tour through Teen Book Scene. Be sure and check back tomorrow for my review!

Your mother wrote you a couple letters before she died to help you understand your demon half better. If you could be face to face with her one more time, what would you most want to say or ask?

Why did she have to die?

You have the ability to see into another person’ s soul; if someone could see yours, what do you think (or hope) it would look like?

It probably looks like a big, loud mess. I hope it at least looks like a beautiful, big, loud mess.

What was more terrifying: facing Belial or coming clean about your demon half to Rob not knowing what his reaction would be?

Belial is terrifying, but I'd take on a hundred Belials rather than have to see a disgusted look on Rob's face.

The length of your hair is directly proportional to the strength of some of your demon traits, forcing you to chop it all off to reduce the effects. Do you think you’ ll ever grow it back out and wield that power?

I guess I'd do it if I had to, but I really hope things never get so bad or so desperate that I'd actually need that much power.

Which of the elements you can communicate with and control is your personal favorite? If you could transfer your control of them temporarily to Rob, which do you think he’ d most enjoy?

Honestly, I'm still not totally comfortable with Spirit. But fire and I get along really well. It also reminds me of my mom. I bet Rob would like Spirit best, though. You know, he's always trying to figure everything and everyone out. Peering into someone's soul might be deep enough to satisfy even him. Maybe.

If you could stand up in front of an assembly of your peers at school and tell them one truth about demons with no repercussions, what would it be?

That not all demons are evil.

Let’s say you develop the ability to travel back to one of the time periods when your mom and your uncle Dagon were revered as gods rather than feared as demons. When and where would you most like to go?

My uncle says that ancient Babylon was when they were at their best. I guess they were like the most powerful gods around back then. Part of me thinks that would be really cool to see. But maybe not. I mean, the idea that anyone would want to worship my uncle is just...weird.

Even though you have a lot of evil to face in the future, what aspect of life are you most excited about moving forward?

Learning how to use this sword and going on a real date. That's about as far ahead as I can look right now.

  7. Didn't really like Jael in Misfit but I liked her in the interview. I love that she would rather face an evil demon than tell Rob about being a half demon. Poor girl!!

  10. Okay, first of all: Jael is a totally awesome name! Secondly, her powers sound really interesting! Especially the correlation between hair length and demon strength. Great interview! I really want to get my hands on Misfit now! :)

  12. Wow, the amount of power you have comes from the length of your hair? That's certainly very different from anything I've read about. Very interesting.

Sorry to hear about Jael's mom passing. Very sad.

  14. I'm not sure about this book. I received a surprise review copy the other day, but its themes seem very religious, which is so not me! I will await your review! :)

  20. This sounds great. I love how straight-forward she is. I thought she was a boy until I read the synopsis on Goodreads. Nice to see a non-angsty girl.

Madigan - There were a few weak spots for me as well, but I thought it was an interesting read for sure.

Ashley - Looking forward to seeing what you think:)

Heather - It'll be up tomorrow. I actually liked Jael though from the comments on this post it seems like she wasn't a favorite for many, but it was a hard read to get through at times due to the content.

Alison - I didn't find her overly angsty which was really nice:)

Aylee - It definitely makes sense when you find out what she is.

Zahida - I didn't mind her, I kind of latched on to her because the story itself made me uncomfortable:) I think people will definitely be split in their reactions to this one!

  31. I have this book for review! Love the last question. Gosh, I don't know I'd be excited about if I were facing evil. But good answer...a sword would definitely come in handy!
