Author Interview: Jill Hathaway and Slide

As part of the promotional tour through Teen Book Scene, I'm super excited today to welcome author Jill Hathaway to the blog to answer a few questions! Slide just released this week from Balzer + Bray (you can read my review here), and for those of you in the Ohio area, Jill and Kimberly Derting are going to be at Books & Co in Dayton on April 18th as part of the Dark Days tour so I'd love to see you there!

If there was one question you wish an interviewer would ask with regard to you as a writer, your process, or Slide, what would it be?

I wish they’d ask what my favorite writing fuel is, and that is most definitely Oreos and Diet Pepsi! If only they would make calorie free Oreos. :(

Name one book you’ve read over and over again yet still could read again tomorrow as though it was the first time.

The Hunger Games. I need to read it again now that the movie’s coming out.

If Vee were able to slide into your mind on release day, what would she see?

She would see me teaching sophomores about comma splice errors. That probably wouldn’t be very interesting.

Are there any scenes from Slide that didn’t make the final cut but you wish had?

Ha, there was a scene where Vee slid into a guy going to the bathroom, but my editor thought that was too gross.

*Jenny snorts her soda here*

Vee’s got a pretty unique ability with being able to slip into people’s minds and see through their eyes, but I’m not sure it’s one I would want for myself. Is there another character in young adult fiction who has a gift or ability you wouldn’t mind possessing?

I wouldn’t mind having a wish necklace like Karou in Daughter of Smoke and Bone.

Thank you, Jenny!

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions Jill! Jill is also humoring me by coming back on the blog for another interview as part of my wrap-up post for the Dayton event, so be sure to check back mid-April for more Slide Q+A! More information on Jill and her books can be found here:

SLIDE
Vee Bell is certain of one irrefutable truth—her sister’s friend Sophie didn’t kill herself. She was murdered.

Vee knows this because she was there. Everyone believes Vee is narcoleptic, but she doesn’t actually fall asleep during these episodes: When she passes out, she slides into somebody else’s mind and experiences the world through that person’s eyes. She’s slid into her sister as she cheated on a math test, into a teacher sneaking a drink before class. She learned the worst about a supposed “friend” when she slid into her during a school dance. But nothing could have prepared Vee for what happens one October night when she slides into the mind of someone holding a bloody knife, standing over Sophie’s slashed body.

Vee desperately wishes she could share her secret, but who would believe her? It sounds so crazy that she can’t bring herself to tell her best friend, Rollins, let alone the police. Even if she could confide in Rollins, he has been acting off lately, more distant, especially now that she’s been spending more time with Zane.

Enmeshed in a terrifying web of secrets, lies, and danger and with no one to turn to, Vee must find a way to unmask the killer before he or she strikes again.

  2. Calorie free oreos! I've heard that if you eat food really fast, the calories don't count. Or if you put hot sauce on it - although that doesn't sound good with oreos. :-)

  7. I would love to have Karou's necklace too. It'll be a double bonus if I could get Akiva too. :D

  8. What? Oreos aren't calorie free? This is news to me. I think you have to mix them with icecream to take the calories off. ;)

And, comma splices are truly evil, aren't they?! hehehe

Fun interview, ladies! Thanks so much for sharing.

P.S. I don't even want to imagine a guy going to the bathroom.

  9. Sliiiiiiiide!!!! I already loved this book, so this interview just made me love this author! (Jill, I think someone should totally invent calorie-free Oreos too. Then I would feel less guilty all the time! <3) And LOL times a million for that bathroom scene that got cut -- that would've been so funny to have in the actual book! x)

Love this interview!! Now every time I read a Jill Hathaway book, I'll remember how awesome she is! :)

  10. Jennifer - Wouldn't they? I would eat those bad boys all the time. Not that I don't now though. I'd just look better if they were in fact calorie free ;-)

Rummanah - YES! I would like an Akiva please:)

Missie - It's shocking isn't it? I've been eating them with the abandon of someone who was oblivious to the nutritional information on the package:) Also, I don't want to imagine the bathroom thing either, but now that you've brought it up I can't help it...

Mimi - Don't you want to read the bathroom scene now? I definitely do. Even though it will no doubt be uncomfortable, I still have the desire to read it now that she mentioned it.

  11. Jill is definitely funny, I wish I had grabbed an ARC of this. I wish the bathroom scene had been left in! No snorting soda Jenny that hurts. Oh I want Karou's necklace and blue hair and some calorie free Oreos as well.

  12. Lol, the cut scene sounded well both gross and different. Would have been fun to read

  14. Heidi - Me too, it's all I can think about now. I'm obsessed with bathroom thoughts!

    Linda - I agree:)

Savy - It would be gross. So of course I'm fascinated and really want to read it now:)

Melissa - ME TOO! Maybe she can publish them at the end of book two...

  15. What a fun interview! I'm still laughing about Jill's comment regarding the boy using the bathroom. That would have been, um, interesting to read about! ;)

  16. Think of all the crazy places you could slide...though a boy using the bathroom would probably not be one of my choices. Certainly wouldn't mind a wish necklace either! Great interview.

  17. Ha! I might have been morbidly interested with the boy bathroom scene, in the sense that I would want to look away form the page, but wouldn't be able to. I guess there's a reason why most authors never write about their characters going to the bathroom.

  18. Sam - Right? Interesting is a good word:)

Mary - It probably wouldn't be mine either, but now I'm all perversely curious.

Aylee - Exactly! Now that it's in my head my brain refuses to think of anything else:)

  19. Fat free Oreos and Pepsi! It sounds like Ms. Hathaway and I would get along just fine, hah. I'm really looking forward to reading SLIDE, and this interview just whets my appetite a little further. The deleted scene sounds like it would have been hilarious. ;)

  20. I wouldn't mind having Karou's necklace either! Great interview Jenny and Ms. Hathaway!

  21. I would love it if Oreo's were fat free. :) The bathroom scene would definitely make for an interesting read! Great interview!

  22. Lol, I think the bathroom scene would be funny but gross and just so random. Great interview, Jenny!

  23. Confession: I don't like Oreos
