Waiting on Wednesday: The Nightmare Dilemma

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine and is a fun way to see what books other bloggers just can't wait to get their hands on!

Arkwell Academy #2
Releases March 4th, 2014 from Tor Teen

From Goodreads:

Dusty Everhart might be able to predict the future through the dreams of her crush, Eli Booker, but that doesn’t make her life even remotely easy. When one of her mermaid friends is viciously assaulted and left for dead, and the school’s jokester, Lance Rathbone, is accused of the crime, Dusty’s as shocked as everybody else. Lance needs Dusty to prove his innocence by finding the real attacker, but that’s easier asked than done. Eli’s dreams are no help, more nightmares than prophecies.

To make matters worse, Dusty’s ex-boyfriend has just been acquitted of conspiracy and is now back at school, reminding Dusty of why she fell for him in the first place. The Magi Senate needs Dusty to get close to him, to discover his real motives. But this order infuriates Eli, who has started his own campaign for Dusty’s heart.

As Dusty takes on both cases, she begins to suspect they’re connected to something bigger. And there’s something very wrong with Eli’s dreams, signs that point to a darker plot than they could have ever imagined.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Nightmare Affair earlier this year, so I'm extremely excited to get back into this world and see what trouble Dusty will stir up next. I'm slightly concerned over the mention of Dusty's ex-boyfriend given my full approval of the budding romance with Eli–my love triangle radar is pinging warning after warning in my head–but seeing as the first book was relatively low in the angst department, I'm going to pick this one up hoping it continues in the same deliciously relationship melodrama-free vein.

Also, anyone else see screaming faces in the black shapes above each of the character's heads on that cover? Or is that just me? At first I thought they were branches or flourishes, but I think they're creepy-yet-cool faces with pointy noses and open mouths, and the one on the right seems to be sucking the "a" of "dilemma" right in. Awesome. I'm a big fan of illustrated covers, so both of the covers in this series have worked really well for me:)

  8. Wow, I didn't notice those faces before :O I don't know if I want to read #1. I know you liked it just as you said, but I.. I don't know. I had it on my tbr pile and I still do, I think, but it just doesn't have the same appeal anymore. I hope there won't be a huge love triangle in this one and your guys is safe from elimination:) Heh.

Of course in my imagination they're like the talking door knobs in the movie Labyrinth. ;)

  12. Although I didn't read the first book yet, I love the covers of this series! I love how matching they are. But, why did you mention the dreaded word "Love Triangle"? :( You know how I am with my love triangles!

  13. Really loving the covers for both of these books -- though I haven't yet read the first one. Daisy sounds like a great character! But I'm with you re. the triangle radar pinging...say it ain't so!

  19. Oooh I love the cover to this book Jenny! I didn't even notice the creepy looking faces until you mentioned it! I unfortunately didn't really enjoy the first book, but the premise to this sounds so enticing! Brilliant pick Jenny! :)

  20. Ooh creepy! I didn't see the faces until you mentioned it, but you're right, that 'a' is totally getting devoured. A bit scared by the love triangle radar going off, but hopefully it won't amount to anything serious. Great WoW pick! (and ps- sorry for comment bombing you, I'm catching up on blog reading after being gone all week :D)

  25. I didn't much care for the first book, I'm afraid. In fact, I gave up halfway through. But I can still admire the cover, right? RIGHT? Tor always has the best ones.

  26. Hmm, I haven't read the first in the series, but I'm liking the cover and how it matches the first so well. I need to go back and see what I missed :D

  30. I haven't read The Nightmare Affair yet, but I have been meaning to check it out. I love the cover of this book and the screaming faces----so cool! Great pick!

  31. So The Nightmare Affair is on my list because you said how much you loved it! But ACK! I really need to read it before this one comes out. Of course, yes, I realize I have some time. But I have a lot of catching up to do!

And yes, I do see the screaming faces. Either they have toddler like ponytails on their heads or they are demons. That's what I think. More disturbing is the sword in the ground/rock/hill/grave??? Yikes!

So hoping there is no love tri!

  32. Well I see the faces now though I originally didn't pay attention. I enjoyed the first book too so I'm looking forward to this sequel.
