Waiting on Wednesday: True Born

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine and is a fun way to see what books other bloggers just can't wait to get their hands on!

True Born #1
L.E. Sterling
Young Adult/Dystopian
Available May 2016 from Entangled Teen

From Goodreads:

Welcome to Dominion City.

After the great Plague descended, the world population was decimated...and their genetics damaged beyond repair.

The Lasters wait hopelessly for their genes to self-destruct. The Splicers pay for expensive treatments that might prolong their life. The plague-resistant True Borns are as mysterious as they are feared…

And then there's Lucy Fox and her identical twin sister, Margot. After endless tests, no one wants to reveal what they are.

When Margot disappears, a desperate Lucy has no choice but to put her faith in the True Borns, led by the charismatic Nolan Storm and the beautiful but deadly Jared Price. As Lucy and the True Borns set out to rescue her sister, they stumble upon a vast conspiracy stretching from Dominion’s street preachers to shady Russian tycoons. But why target the Fox sisters?

As they say in Dominion, it’s in the blood.

WHAT ARE THEY YOU GUYS?! I have to know what Lucy and her twin sister are and how they fit into this plague-infested, genetically-damaged world. I'm mildly concerned about the possibility of a love triangle given the mention of both Nolan and Jared, but I'm hoping it's going to work out to where we maybe get two romances–one for each sister–instead of one drama-fueled triangle. *fingers crossed*

Darker Days Blog Tour: Guest Post + Giveaway

Today I'm super excited to welcome author Jus Accardo and Jessie, the protagonist of her newest paranormal young adult release Darker Days, to the blog to talk a bit about pleasing a mom who just happens to know how to kick a little butt. Jus and the team at Rockstar Book Tours have put together a fantastic tour, so be sure and check out the bottom of the post for not only details on a fun giveaway, but also a list of all the participating blogs so you can check out more reviews, interviews and general Darker Days awesomeness!

JESSIE DARKER'S 5 WAYS TO MAKE
AN ASS KICKING MOM HAPPY
  • For the neat freak Mom—Clean up the corpses. Just get done with a particularly messy trap and slap? Forget doing the dishes. Let Mom put her feet up while you dispose of the otherworldly body bits.

  • For the fashion savvy Mom—Tell her you’ll take Pet possession duty for the next month. Does your Mom constantly complain about the fact that demon drool stains? Does she groan when the call comes in to say Fido down the road is breathing fire and peeing acid on the carpets?  Trust me. She—and her wardrobe—will thank you.

  • For the frugal Mom—Buy her a bulk bag of quartz powder and a lighter. Forget flowers and lame-o “World’s best Mom” charm bracelets. What good are those things when trapped and staring down the stinky nose of a Zombie?

  • For the sensible Mom—A good pair of running shoes. There’s nothing as priceless as a good pair of kicks. Giving Mom sensible footwear so she’ll be able to outrun the big bad on her ass is going to ensure years of companionship and plenty of memorable, late night Mother/Daughter monster mashes.

  • For the hip Mom—An iPod loaded with a catalog of musical kickassery. Everything from Hardcore punk, to those weird hair bands she loves so much.

DARKER DAYS
(releases August 26th from Entangled Teen)

Jessie Darker goes to high school during the day, but at night she helps with the family investigation business. Cheating husbands and stolen inheritances? They’re your girls—but their specialty is a bit  darker. Zombie in your garage? Pesky Poltergeist living in your pool? They’ll have the problem solved in a magical minute. For a nominal fee, of course...

When gorgeous new client, Lukas Scott, saunters into the office requesting their help to find a stolen box, it sounds like a simple case—until the truth comes out. The box is full of Sin.

Seven deadly ones, in fact.

They’ve got five days to recapture the Sins before they're recalled by the box, taking seven hijacked human bodies with them. Easy peasy—except for one thing...

There’s a spell that will allow the Sins to remain free, causing chaos forever. When the key ingredient threatens the life of someone she knows, Jessie must make the ultimate choice between love and family—or lose everything.

MY THOUGHTS
Darker Days is a laugh-out-loud, thrilling start to a new series, gifting us with a protagonist whose sarcasm charms and whose acknowledgement of her own flaws has us falling more and more in love with her with each page. In addition to a standout young heroine, we are also treated to a well-executed mystery and romance, ensuring any of our small nitpicks along the way are vastly outnumbered by marks in the story’s favor. Though this is the first installment in a series, we get a complete plot arc wherein events are nicely wrapped up for us, but there’s also numerous legs for this series to stand on, a veritable centipede of young adult fiction ready to move forward and usher us along for the non-stop ride.

As mentioned previously, Jessie is full to brimming with snark, and while many times an abundance of something as tricky as dry wit and sarcasm can grate on our nerves if not handled with care, Jessie remains firmly on the amusing side of the line. She wields her snark with consummate skill, intending it to sting those who dare I say deserve it, while at other times using it to defuse tense situations, infusing her words with warmth and humor and bringing a smile to our faces every time. She does have a tendency to repeat a few phrases such as “hell in a hailstorm” with more frequency than we might like, reminding us she’s a teenager despite the very adult battles she fights side by side with her mom, but that minor quibble doesn’t detract from the success of her character as a whole.

Another highlight of this story is the presence of family in Jessie’s life. Her mother is neither an absentee parent nor someone who’s completely oblivious to what’s happening in her daughter’s life, instead she’s involved at every turn without being smothering or controlling. She and Jessie have an extraordinarily healthy relationship, one that’s certainly not perfect as both make mistakes, but one that’s full of respect and genuine heartfelt affection, leaving us excited to see how the two of them are going to continue taking on the world in the next installment.

Overall, Darker Days is a very strong start to Ms. Accardo’s new series, the romance daring to leave all instant declarations of love at the door, and progressing instead at a nice pace wherein they neither develop feelings too quickly nor fall into a vicious cycle of push and pull that leaves us a seething mass of frustrated reader. The concluding events leave us extremely excited to see how things are going to progress for the Darker women and the men in their lives, and book two simply cannot release soon enough.

Rating: 4/5

Waiting on Wednesday + Giveaway: Relic

THE STORY
After a raging fire consumes her town and kills her parents, Maggie Davis is on her own to protect her younger sister and survive best she can in the Colorado town of Burning Mesa. In Maggie’s world, the bones of long-extinct magical creatures such as dragons and sirens are mined and traded for their residual magical elements, and harnessing these relics’ powers allows the user to wield fire, turn invisible, or heal even the worst of injuries.

Working in a local saloon, Maggie befriends the spirited showgirl Adelaide and falls for the roguish cowboy Landon. But when she proves to have a particular skill at harnessing the relics’ powers, Maggie is whisked away to the glamorous hacienda of Álvar Castilla, the wealthy young relic baron who runs Burning Mesa. Though his intentions aren’t always clear, Álvar trains Maggie in the world of relic magic. But when the mysterious fires reappear in their neighboring towns, Maggie must discover who is channeling relic magic for evil before it’s too late.

Relic is a thrilling adventure set in a wholly unique world, and a spell-binding story of love, trust, and the power of good.

This book sounds really different, and I think that's what I like most about it. A paranormal wild west of sorts. WIN. Also, when I first looked at the cover, I thought the markings around the title were simple tattoo-like scrollwork, but I love that they're actually line drawings of dragons and other creatures. I'm pretty sure I see a wolf in addition to the dragons, and I'm going to go out on a limb and say I see a mermaid (siren?) in the lower left corner. I really enjoy the fact that this cover is more than what it initially seems at first glance:)

EXCERPT

The evening started off so calm. Crickets were singing in the sagebrush, and the oppressive heat of daytime had been swept away by a velvety breeze, which drifted in through the open windows. Ella was playing with Sassy’s new litter of kittens up in the loft, and Jeb sat by the fire, polishing the brand new gun he’d gotten for his fourteenth birthday the week before. I was scraping a broom over the floor of our little one-room house, trying my best to banish the red-orange sand that seemed our constant companion. But my mind soon drifted from my chores.

I stood in the open doorway, in the warm twilight, gazing at the vast desert beyond. It stretched endlessly in either direction, with nothing but sage and rocks and the occasional scrub brush to break the monotony. The dark smudge of Haydenville sat on the horizon, a small spit of a town, not much more interesting than the cactus. It always made me feel lonesome to stare out at the stillness around us.

As I leaned my head against the doorframe and watched the first star pierce through the indigo sky, a reckless wish burned in my heart. I gazed up and let myself envision a sleek dragon diving out of the scrape of clouds. A creature long extinct, returned to breathe life back into this barren place. I pictured the ancient animal curling around the moon and soaring over the red-rock cliffs beyond our house. But as it swept downward, a strange glow on the horizon caught my attention.

I straightened, squinting in the direction of the wavering light. It was a wide line of orange spreading across the dark landscape in the distance, painting the night sky a deep amber. The breeze that drifted past my cheek carried the distinct scent of smoke. This was no figment of my imagination. This was fire.

And it was coming from Haydenville.
