Waiting on Wednesday: Three Dark Crowns

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine and is a fun way to see what books other bloggers just can't wait to get their hands on!

Kendare Blake
YA Fantasy
Releases September 2016 from HarperTeen

From Goodreads:

In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose...it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins.

The last queen standing gets the crown.

Ummm. I feel like all I really need to say about this one is YES PLEASE! This story sounds like a fantasy Tudor court meets the Borgia family and I can't wait to dive into all the scheming and politics involved in battling for the crown. WHICH SISTER AM I GOING TO ROOT FOR? At the moment I'm leaning toward Katharine simply because she seems to be a bit of an underdog - not sure how helpful being able to withstand poisons will be unless someone is actively trying to poison her, and given her sisters are probably aware of this gift, it doesn't seem like they'd choose this method to take her down. Both Mirabella and Arsinoe seem to have more active gifts, so Katharine seems to be at the biggest disadvantage and that earns her my initial support.

Also, Kendare Blake is the author which makes adding this to the TBR list a no brainer.

THE STORY (from Goodreads)
What if the person you need the most is someone you’ve never met?

Everything about Jessie is wrong. At least, that’s what it feels like during her first week of junior year at her new ultra-intimidating prep school in Los Angeles. Just when she’s thinking about hightailing it back to Chicago, she gets an email from a person calling themselves Somebody/Nobody (SN for short), offering to help her navigate the wilds of Wood Valley High School. Is it an elaborate hoax? Or can she rely on SN for some much-needed help?

It’s been barely two years since her mother’s death, and because her father eloped with a woman he met online, Jessie has been forced to move across the country to live with her stepmonster and her pretentious teenage son.

In a leap of faith—or an act of complete desperation—Jessie begins to rely on SN, and SN quickly becomes her lifeline and closest ally. Jessie can’t help wanting to meet SN in person. But are some mysteries better left unsolved?

MY THOUGHTS
Tell Me Three Things is a delightful contemporary read, mixing humor with the challenges of starting a whole new life to give us the perfect blend of sweet, silly and serious.

Jessie feels beautifully genuine, not exaggerated for dramatic fictional effect, but rather someone who resonates from the moment her thoughts about SN's first email spill across the pages. Anyone who has ever experienced the first day at a new school will sympathize with Jessie from chapter one, her nerves something that endears her to us instantly, while her struggles to navigate her new circumstances only deepen our affection. She's adorably unsure of herself at school, hoping against hope that SN isn't some cruel prank to humiliate the new girl, but able to find humor in almost any situation despite her many ups and downs.

She handles the stereotypical mean girl extraordinarily well, never rising to her bait but never tucking tail and running either, instead moving forward with an admirable determination. Her newly-formed friendships with a pair of classmates as well as her love/hate relationship with her new stepbrother keep as as glued to the pages as her messages with SN, ensuring this story feels emotionally rich without trying too hard to hook us by the heartstrings and reel us in.

For the romance lovers like myself, the slow-burn relationship with SN is everything we could hope for, with just enough young men in her life (in a decidedly drama-less way) to keep us from being one hundred percent confident along the way in our guess as to SN's identity. When the big reveal (though really it's obvious by this time who it is since Jessie has strong feelings for a specific someone) comes it's impossible to suppress a goofy grin and not do a little happy dance, and we find ourselves on the last page with a strong desire to go back and re-read all their messages one more time.

The Asset Blog Tour: Interview + Giveaway

http://kismetbooktours.com/2016/01/the-asset-by-anna-del-mar/

Today I'm so pleased to welcome author Anna Del Mar to the blog as part of the promotional tour for the first book in her new Wounded Warrior romance series, The Asset. Those of you who are frequent visitors to this blog know what a romance lover I am, and when you add a military hero (in this case a SEAL) to the mix I basically go into meltdown mode. Must. Read. Now. Anna was nice enough to answer a few questions for me, so I hope you guys enjoy the interview! Be sure and check the bottom of the post as well for all the details on a special giveaway:)

I’m 99% sure I would last approximately 4 minutes in Navy SEAL training before I curled up in the fetal position and started crying. How long do you estimate you’d last?

Four minutes? You’re tough, girl! I don’t think I’d make it to the sixty second mark. Plus, I’d want to talk about my challenges with my instructors. I don’t know about you, but the term Hell Week? Not very appealing to me.

What are 3 small things about The Asset's wounded warrior hero, Ash Hunter, that will surely make female readers everywhere want to pick this book up immediately?

First, Ash might be wounded, but he’s by no means out of the game. He’s got the skills, training and experience that allow him to discover Lia’s secrets. This wounded warrior is about to kick some ass.

Second, there’s a lot more to Ash than meets the eye. He has access to resources Lia could only dream of and he won’t hesitate to use them. Now, if he could only win Lia’s trust, he’d clear the path to her heart.

And third, Ash recognizes Lia as a survivor. He understands that she’s a veteran of life’s most terrifying battles and that she suffers from her own version of PTSD. Most importantly, he’s patient. He will watch. He will wait. And he’ll be there when she’s ready for him.

If Lia could ask you one question about why you wrote her and Ash’s story the way you did, what would she most want to know?

Hmm. What an interesting question. I’ve never been asked that one before. I think Lia would want to know why I started with Ash being wounded in the first place. Yeah, I think she might throw that one in my face a little, not angrily, that’s not Lia for you, but she’s very protective of Ash.

I always have a soft spot for the heroes who have physical or mental wounds they’re trying to heal, so I have little doubt I’m going to fall madly in love with Ash. Who would you say are your all-time favorite romance heroes?

I’m the exact same way. I like heroes who are brave, strong, smart and sexy, but also vulnerable. I think contrast makes for the best kinds of heroes. A hero who knows suffering is a hero who values life and love. I don’t want perfection. I want my heroes to be human, like you and I, struggling, conflicted. What better way to get to know the depth of someone’s character but to watch him or her fight their way out of their weaknesses and reclaim their strengths?

As to my all-time favorite romance heroes, that would be a long list. How about I give you one that really stuck with me over the years? One of the first romance novels I ever read was Outlander, by Dianna Gabaldon. I fell in love with Jamie Frasier on the spot. I think it was precisely because he suffered from the get-go and then came back with the sort of resiliency that made him a better person and a phenomenal hero. He made my heart melt every time. To this day, when I travel to Scotland, I look around the streets of Edinburgh, wondering if Jamie is around, time-traveling and—ehem— available.

If you were to make yourself a heroine in the Wounded Warrior series, what are a few of the traits your leading man would have?

Well, I’m definitively not one of the heroines in the Wounded Warrior series, but I can say, with a measure of confidence, that I’ve had a little say about the traits of the leading men of The Asset and the Wounded Warrior series.

My leading men are leaders, brave, strong, smart, sexy, resilient, decisive, determined, skilled. But they’re also sensitive, emphatic and compassionate, because they’ve experienced suffering and struggled with survival and recovery. They’re not big talkers. That’s just not who they are. But they’re big doers. They’re going to show you what they mean with their actions. They look at life from a different perspective. They’ve been close to death. They know what’s important. This time around, they’re going to give love all they’ve got.

Thanks so much Anna!

Review: Fire Touched

FIRE TOUCHED
Mercy Thompson #9
Patricia Briggs
Urban Fantasy
352 pages
Ace
Available March 8th
Source: ARC from publisher for review

THE STORY (from Goodreads)
Tensions between the fae and humans are coming to a head. And when coyote shapeshifter Mercy and her Alpha werewolf mate, Adam, are called upon to stop a rampaging troll, they find themselves with something that could be used to make the fae back down and forestall out-and-out war: a human child stolen long ago by the fae.

Defying the most powerful werewolf in the country, the humans, and the fae, Mercy, Adam, and their pack choose to protect the boy no matter what the cost. But who will protect them from a boy who is fire touched?

MY THOUGHTS
Fire Touched is everything there is to love about the Mercy Thompson series, reuniting us with a beloved heroine who has an uncanny ability to land herself smack dab in the middle of epic supernatural trouble. One of the things that makes Mercy so lovable however is how she handles the problems she both purposely and inadvertently causes, always stepping up to be part of the solution while charming us with her gift of humor even in the darkest of moments.

Since Bone Crossed (book 4) when Adam made Mercy Pack, Mercy's faced more than a little negativity from other pack members who don't find her to be a suitable mate for their alpha, and while Adam is an extraordinary man and mate, he's continuously fallen short in his defense of Mercy to the pack. His lack of outspoken support for Mercy has rankled a touch when pack politics have come into play over the past few books, but in this newest installment we have the pleasure of seeing Adam reach his breaking point with the pack and finally lay down the law in spectacular fashion. We also get his reasons for staying silent in his own words, something that goes a long way to smoothing any mildly ruffled feathers from his previous inaction.

As always though, Mercy and Adam's relationship, and their joint relationship with the pack, takes a back seat to the latest paranormal problem to seek sanctuary in their territory. One of the highlights of this series is the wide range of supernatural creatures Ms. Briggs brings into play, and she doesn't disappoint this time around with a classic bridge troll and a few close encounters with a number of fae powerhouses. Through it all we get a united Mercy and Adam, stronger and more in love than ever as they continue to be trailblazers bringing the human world and the supernatural world a step closer to living in relative harmony.

Overall, Fire Touched is another quick, fun read, leaving us completely satisfied and content to wait until it's Mercy and Adam time once again.

Review: The Smell of Other People's Houses

THE SMELL OF OTHER PEOPLE'S HOUSES
Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock
Contemporary Young Adult
240 pages
Wendy Lamb Books/Penguin Random House

Source: eARC from publisher for review

THE STORY (from Goodreads)
In Alaska, 1970, being a teenager here isn’t like being a teenager anywhere else. This deeply moving and authentic debut is for fans of Rainbow Rowell, Louise Erdrich, Sherman Alexie, and Benjamin Alire Saenz. Intertwining stories of love, tragedy, wild luck, and salvation on the edge of America’s Last Frontier introduce a writer of rare talent.

Ruth has a secret that she can’t hide forever. Dora wonders if she can ever truly escape where she comes from, even when good luck strikes. Alyce is trying to reconcile her desire to dance, with the life she’s always known on her family’s fishing boat. Hank and his brothers decide it’s safer to run away than to stay home—until one of them ends up in terrible danger.

Four very different lives are about to become entangled. This unforgettable book is about people who try to save each other—and how sometimes, when they least expect it, they succeed.

MY THOUGHTS
The Smell of Other People's Houses is a story that's deceptively simple, one that gives us a few fleeting moments with a handful of characters as their lives briefly intertwine before leaving us at the last page waving a fond farewell. Despite it's more slice-of-life feel, it's a story that's hard to put down, the easy flow to the writing and the richness of the characters drawing us in and ensuring we're fully engaged from first page to last.

Stories with multiple narrators can be sometimes be tricky, a favorite among the group making time spent away from them a source of anxiety, but despite the presence of weightier issues involving teen pregnancy and various forms of child abuse and neglect, each character's story has a sort of quiet hope to it, making it hard to favor one over the others. Ruth finds herself pregnant and shipped off to an abbey to serve out her pregnancy in relative isolation, Dora battles a neglectful mother and the ghost of an abusive father, Hank attempts to save his brothers from a steadily worsening home situation by running away, and Alyce struggles with the guilt of a dream that differs from that of her father. Each has their own set of problems, but they all share an incredibly strong mental fortitude, facing their demons as they arise with a quiet strength that's endlessly fascinating.

They don't yell and rage at their circumstances, cursing and blaming their families for putting them in their current positions, instead they all simply deal as best they can and take us along for the ride as their problems lead them to one another. Wondering how each of their lives are going to intersect is part of the joy of this story, and while the end gives us no concrete answers as to how their lives are going to unfold moving forward, somehow it's enough just to have had these couple hundred pages with them.

Overall, The Smell of Other People's Houses is not a story that rips our hearts out and stomps on them or bowls us over with non-stop action, instead it slowly invites us in thanks to everyday people living everyday lives that just happen to be marked by more darkness than most. None of them allow that darkness to win though, bringing a smile to our faces as they each fight in their own way to hold on to what matters most.

Mercy Thompson Blog Tour + Giveaway: Bone Crossed

I'm absurdly excited today to be a part of a very special tour celebrating all things Mercy Thompson as we inch closer to the release of book 9, Fire Touched. Each participating blog is highlighting one book in the series, recapping juicy tidbits from each story and talking about why that particular story is our favorite.

I have the pleasure of chatting (or fangirl rambling, whichever) about Bone Crossed, book four in this series and the one that has the distinct honor of being re-read the most. Today just happens to be my birthday as well, and really, what better way to spend it than with Mercy and Adam?

Since this tour is re-read based, there are spoilers for book 3, Iron Kissed, below.

It's no secret that I love romance. Love. It. It's rare for me to pick up a book, adult or YA, that doesn't feature any kind of romantic relationship because I love to obsess over swoon-worthy couples. It's because of my love of romance that Bone Crossed tops my list of Mercy Thompson books, as it's where the relationship between Alpha werewolf Adam and coyote shifter Mercy really takes center stage.

We're left at the end of book three with a romantic cliffhanger, the last page a painful tease for romantics like myself as we find ourselves (finally!) approaching an intimate moment between Adam and Mercy. He's asked her to give him an answer to whether or not she'll be his mate, and these two little lines are what greet us on the very last page:

"Mercy?

In answer, I pulled the t-shirt over my head and dropped it on the floor.

WHAT? We finally get a glimpse of physical intimacy between Adam and Mercy and then it's cruelly yanked away from us! But. BUT. Bone Crossed picks up at the exact moment Iron Kissed leaves off, and we get the above truncated scene in full. *flails*

Mercy is brutally raped in Iron Kissed, so Bone Crossed gives us our beloved heroine at her most vulnerable, struggling with the aftermath of her attack:

My soul was a lot more battered than my body, but I couldn't see it in the mirror. Hopefully no one else could either. It was that invisible damage that left me afraid to leave the bathroom and face Adam, who waited in my bedroom.

Mercy has been skittish when it comes to Adam since book one, so fiercely independent that she fears the hold he'll have on her if she agrees to be his mate. This fear has kept the two of them dancing around one another for three books, but Mercy's rape grants her a kind of clarity when it comes to Adam, and the fact that he's quite possibly the most amazing man ever helps her get a handle on her fear of anyone else exerting control over her.

He grunted. "It won't help with the pack, not until it's for real. But with Samuel out of the way, I thought you'd be able to decide if you were interested or not. If you weren't interested, I could regroup. If you agreed to be mine, I can wait until Hell freezes over for you."

*Jenny dies*

Aside from being a pivotal book in terms of Adam and Mercy's relationship, it also gives us the event that acts as a catalyst for all kinds of inter-pack problems that grow with each subsequent book. In a moment of panic and desperation to keep Mercy's vampire friend Stefan from inadvertently taking control of her, Adam makes Mercy Pack, bonding her to not only him but also to all the members of his pack as well.

This creates an enormous ripple effect given a number of Adam's pack members view Mercy as less-than since she's a coyote shifter and not a werewolf, and marks the beginning of Mercy having to weigh the personal against what's best for the pack. Despite the challenges the two of them have to face concerning the pack as a result of Adam's split-second decision, we get to bask in the tender moments that result from the giant leaps forward in their relationship:

"Thank you, Adam," I told him. "Thank you for tearing Tim into small Tim bits. Thank you for forcing me to drink one last cup of fairy bug-juice so I could have use of both of my arms. Thank you for being there, for putting up with me." By that point I wasn't laughing anymore. "Thank you for keeping me from being another of Stefan's sheep–I'll take pack over that any day. Thank you for making the tough calls, for giving me time." I stood up and walked to him, leaning against him and pressing my face against his shoulder. "Thank you for loving me."

While Bone Crossed is perhaps more relationship-focused than the previous books, it's still Urban Fantasy at its finest and has Mercy darting off to help an old college friend with a pesky ghost problem. Of course one problem is never enough for our Mercy, so Bone Crossed also treats us to the escalation of tensions between Mercy and the local seethe of vampires. As a result of Mercy's actions in the previous book, Vampire Queen Marsilia seeks revenge on Mercy and isn't afraid to drag those closest to her into the mix.

Mercy is bitten by a number of different vampires, threatened by a ghost and a Vampire Queen, and generally disliked by Adam's disgruntled pack members, but through it all she's as strong as ever, even as she battles the demons her rape left behind.

Overall, Bone Crossed is a turning point both for Mercy and Adam personally as well as for the Columbia Basin Pack as a whole, and though this entire series has my highest recommendation, this particular installment will always be my all-time favorite.
