Waiting on Wednesday: Kinked

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine and is a fun way to see what books other bloggers just can't wait to get their hands on!

A Novel of the Elder Races #6
Thea Harrison
Adult Paranormal Romance
Releases from Berkley/Penguin on November 5th

From Goodreads:

As a harpy, Sentinel Aryal is accustomed to dealing with hate, but Sentinel Quentin Caeravorn manages to inspire in her a burning ire unlike anything she’s ever known. Aryal believes the new Sentinel to be a criminal, and vows to take him out as soon as the opportunity arises. But the harpy’s incessant wrath has pushed Quentin to the limit, and forces him to make a deadly vow of his own.

To put an end to the conflict, Dragos, Lord of the Wyr, sends them on a reconnaissance mission to the Elven land of Numenlaur. Forced to work together, Aryal and Quentin’s mutual antagonism escalates. Each fight draws forth more passion—culminating in an explosively sexual confrontation. But when their quest reveals real danger, Aryal and Quentin must resolve their differences in ways beyond the physical, before the entire Wyr is threatened.

The Novels of the Elder Races is one of my very favorite paranormal romance series, but for those of you who haven't read any of them yet, fear not, as this is a series where each book can work as a standalone. Yes, you'll miss out on a little backstory and some world-building, but each book (with the exception of book 5 which is a direct sequel to book 1) features a new couple with their own distinct personalities and problems.

I'm perhaps more excited for the release of this book than I have been for any of the others (which is saying something) because it features one of my very favorite romantic setups: Enemies to lovers. Oh yes. Give me a deeply antagonistic relationship any day and I'm a very happy woman. Aryal and Quentin DESPISE each other. Despise. Want-to-punch-each-other-in-the-face-and-will-smile-while-doing-it kind of despise. I cannot wait for the moment when all that anger turns into something else. *rubs hands together impatiently*

  1. Iekk!!! Haven't heard about this series yet apart from you of course :) But I always look for some amazing Urban Fantasy (it is UF right?) to get me hooked!

    1. It's paranormal romance technically, but this series has a UF feel to it with its badass heroines:) I'm a big fan Danny, BIG!

    1. It's fabulous, I love that it features lesser-known paranormal beings like dragons and gryphons and thunderbirds. Win.

  6. One of my favorite romantic relationships in books is enemies to lovers so whohoo!! I'm glad we're on the same page. I'm currently listening to Elemental Assassin books by R. Vincent and I'm on book #3. I'm loving this series, btw. I know you like them as well, yay ;) I think it'd be an overkill of adult paranormal/urban fantasy for me since I'm not the biggest fan so perhaps I'll explore this book/series a little further on when I'm done with Elemental Assassin's published books:)

    1. I do adore the Elemental Assassin series, I'm so glad you're enjoying it so far! I think it keeps getting better:) This series is definitely different is more romance-based (which works perfectly for me), so I hope you get the chance to try it at some point!

  9. Oh, I haven't heard of these but I'm glad to see they can be read as stand-alones! I love series like that and harpies sound so different from my usual paranormal reads, so I'll have to check this out for sure! Thanks for putting it on my radar, Jenny! :)

    1. I love that each book is a different set of characters (except book 5). Most of the heroes are all in Dragos's core group so you meet them in book one and get to see bits and pieces of them in each subsequent book, but you can still read their books alone and understand the relationship and the problems they face:)

  12. I've never read this series, but I should check it out b/c it seems like something I'd like. You have me laughing out loud with the whole enemies turning into something more. I'm the same way when it comes to what I like in my bookish relationships!! Great pick!

  13. Pretty much anything that you read and love is guaranteed to work for me. You know this to be true, Jenny. I also love that these books can be read as stand-alones...that's not something you see every day! Great pick this week, lady!

    1. I do love me some paranormal romance. I like too that the creatures in these books are more unusual, and I'm madly in love with one of the gryphons. I can't wait for his book:)

  14. Oh, heeyyyyy. I like that cover.

But not as much as I like you. Just so ya know.

  15. Oh enemies falling in love ALWAYS makes me happy. It's probably my second favourite setup to best friends falling in love. And I'm glad each book works as a standalone! I saw the #6 and panicked a little, as you know how bad I am at catching up with long series. :P I hope this lives up to your expectations!

    1. ME TOO SAM! I love best friends falling in love too, or someone falling in love with their best friend's sister/brother. That's always a winner for me as well.

  16. Ooh! I'm so glad to hear that even though this is a series each book can be a stand alone. I'm relieved I wouldn't need to do catch up with the previous books because the blurb made me want to really read this. Haha! Thank you for sharing this, Jenny! :)

    1. If you read the previous books you'll meet Aryal and Quentin, but nothing so huge happens with them in those books that you wouldn't be able to understand their story if you started with this one. She's great about making it so you can read them in any order if you so chose.

  17. Very cool! I like that there is a different kind of paranormal creature, not the norm.

  18. I was about to skip over this b/c it's a 6 in a series, but then I remembered that I HAVE read Dragon Bound and LOVED. I totally know who these characters are! I haven't read the rest of the series, but they're on my list, and I agree that I like that they're all standalones (tho doesn't one of the books revisit our favorite dragon again?). Anyway, I agree about loving enemies to love romances, and I will for sure be checking these out again. They are such fun!

  19. What? What?! WHAT?! Did you just advocate skipping Dragos' book?! *hyperventilates into brown paper bag* *passes out from lack of oxygen*

  20. ooh I love hate turned to romance relationships..they are always so hot...great pick and I am glad they can be read as standalone!

  21. OH Jenny, I hadn't heard of this one until you mentioned it, but I've had such great luck with your adult PNR recommendations. And each book (besides book 5) can work as a stand-alone? That's basically calling my name, especially the enemies to lovers romance, though I don't know if I'd want to wait for this one instead of just starting right off the bat... choices, choices, and a book buying ban. Blah!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Darn it! I've been wanting to get into this series. I mean so many of you are telling me to get my hiney in gear and read them. I think I do need to do that. Put me on that want list for this book (and the others... LOL).

  23. Okay, if you say I'll only miss a little backstory because I don't think I can get through all those books, I love enemies to lovers stories. Especially as you describe it- "Want-to-punch-each-other-in-the-face-and-will-smile-while-doing-it kind of despise".

    That sounds like fun!!

  24. I love this series! I can't wait for Kinked. I've always been interested in Quentin since we first met him in Dragon Bound. It's going to be interesting seeing him and Aryal together without trying to kill each other. LOL

  25. How have I not heard of this series?! Enemies to lovers is one of my favorite types of romances as well! :) I'm giving this a closer look. You like this as much as Fever/Iced series, Jenny?

  26. I need to start this series. I think I've read the first one, but I totally stopped for some reason. I am excited to go back to this now! I love enemies to lovers storyline too! :D I can't wait to check this out! Great pick, Jenny! :D

  27. I'm not familiar with this series or author really but I like hearing it can be read as a standalone. I'm not as into enemies to lovers as you are but I've enjoyed some variations.

  28. Enemies to lovers? Yes please! It's great to hear that these read like standalones, because otherwise I'd have so much catch up reading before I could get to that delicious setup. I can't believe I've never read anything by Thea Harrison before, I keep hearing such wonderful praise for her stories! This series is definitely going on my TBR.
