Insurgent: Cover Redesign

Hey Everyone!

I'm sure most of you have either seen or participated in the rather epic marketing campaign unleashed by HarperTeen to promote Insurgent, the sequel to last year's fantastic dystopian novel Divergent. I recently stumbled across a fun contest and giveaway on All Things Urban Fantasy asking entrants to recreate the cover for Insurgent as part of this campaign and thought I would give it a go! Below are my three submissions, and if any of you are interested in participating, the contest runs through April 28th and all the details can be found HERE.

COVER #1

You can't really tell at this size, but the trees have a brushed metal effect I added to try and give the cover a bit more of a futuristic feel.

(I also need to give a shout out to my mom who is a phenomenal illustrator and helped me create the trees)

  1. Wow these are simply amazing! I'm in love with Cover #1, the font and the trees (Amity, right?) look beautiful. Great job!

  2. Awesome covers. Love #1, as well. The others look like something from a contemporary novel with a title like "Losing Faith" or "Finding Charity" or something else about a girl and her tragic-story sister.
    Good luck in the contest!

  3. My favorite is #3. I love it. I would buy that book right away without even looking at the blurb.

  4. Are you epic or what???!?!?! Honey, you are amazing!!!!!!!! Did you ever thought of designing covers as a side business? You would totally rock, those covers rock so hard! I can't even decide which one I love more.. But, I'm so going to vote for you!!
    Gosh, you are awesome!

  5. WOW Jenny, these are amazing! I love them all, though I think I love #3 the best. They all look so professional. :)

  6. Wow, Jenny, these are absolutely awesome! I especially love the first one, but the third is great too. I love the orange details (: I think you could easily be a professional cover designer actually

  7. Jenny, your talents know no bounds! I love them all, but #3 especially stands out because of the colors. So are you adding cover design to your repertoire? :)

  9. Olivia - Thank you! Yes, I went with an Amity theme on covers 1&3 since the Insurgent cover featured a tree:)

Riv - The second 2 do look a little more contemporary, I agree. I just really liked the jagged edges of the bridge on cover two- they had a sinister feel to them, and I liked the blurred effect. It adds a little chaos which I thought suited the book based on what happened at the end of Divergent!

Kara - Thank you! I love the colors in that one:)

Danny - Thank you so much:) I'm thinking about adding a design tab to the blog, been thinking about it for a while. We'll see!

Sam - Thank you! I really appreciate it:)

Celine - Thank you!! I was really happy with how they turned out:)

Ash - Hahaha I might be! It would fit in really well with the design business I run from home already, and it would give me something new to work on. I love being in the wedding industry, but it can be repetitive in terms of design sometimes, and book covers would let me stretch my creativity a bit more!

Natalia - Hahaha no! Have no fear, no actual redesign on the cover:) I hate when they change covers too, and I love the Insurgent cover they have now! Glad you like my designs though:)

  10. Dude, I bow down to your talent! They definitely look like real covers, and like Danny/Ash said, you should totally add book covers to your design business!

Hmmm not sure which I like better because they're all so cool in different ways. Perhaps the first one, though... I could see the trilogy all embossed in different metallics... like the Divergent flame one could be the bronze, the Amity trees the silver, and then whichever other one leading up to gold for the third book.

  11. Ashley - Oooooo I love that idea! You are brilliant:) Maybe when we see the third book's cover I'll remake those two and have the whole trilogy:)

  12. You have created some awesome designs Jenny! They are all fantastic, I seriously can't choose a favourite, it would pribably have to be either number 1 or 3! I would be terrible at creating designs!

  20. OH MY GOSH, JENNY! I. Can't. Even. TELL you how amazing all of those covers are! They're so professional and beautiful and holy wow, I wish I could be as tech savvy as you but my cover redesign skills are pretty much limited to cut and paste! x)

I love all three of them so much that I can't even pick a favourite! I'm so in love with the first one for how simplistically GORGEOUS it is, the second one is such a seriously stunning picture, and the third one is just too beautiful for words. And I'm not just saying that because I'm Canadian and the maple leap put a huge smile on my face!

Why you so talented, Jenny? :') <3 I LOVE & I really hope you win!!

  25. Woah - wait - you made these? They are all incredible. They look like legit book covers and are in fact, quite a bit more pretty than certain book covers produced by major book publishers that I can think of. Really great job, Jenny!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Awesome! I wish I could make something like that. You are so talented!!! I like them all. Ugh...I can't choose. Can we vote for yours?

  28. I'm caught between 2 & 3
Two has more emotion but three is more likely to catch my attention.

    They are each fabulous.

  31. Wow Jenny! These are great! I don't know which I like the best, but I think I like the middle one with the bridge the best. They are all so cool!

  33. Jenny!!! Why the heck aren't you a cover designer? OMG, woman, your talent is truly spectacular! I love, love, love that first cover. It is amazing, but the simplicity of the other two is pretty dynamic as well.

P.S. If I ever finish my book, you are doing my cover design. I won't take no for an answer. LOL

  34. JENNY! Wow!!!!!!!!

Holy SHIT! THOSE are flipping AMAZING!!!!! I'm pretty much in LOVE with the first one. Can you imagine those brushed metal trees (I can totally tell) Can you imagine them like foil embossed?! *gasp*
